Energy From Oxygen

Oxygen is needed by every cell in your body in order to live. If you can’t breathe, then you certainly can’t get the physical activity your body needs to be healthy. Building lung capacity is important to everyone. Healthy lungs work to bring in oxygen that the body needs to create energy.  Regular exercise requires the body to burn energy. Your lung tissue has to work harder to get more oxygen into the body and blood stream. When the lungs work harder, such as from exercise, the volume of air (air capacity) that your lungs can hold, grows stronger.

Many smokers are motivated to quit because they see the hypocrisy of having a cigarette when leaving the gym or after a workout. It’s amazing how getting your heart pumping makes you feel so good. If a person is addicted to nicotine then there is an inner battle going on. The “addiction,” which wants to light up, and the logical part of the brain that is enjoying the gratifying effects of exercise. This is why it’s common that exercising can trigger the desire to quit smoking for good.

It’s rewarding to observe the body becoming more capable with each workout. Just as the muscles repair and become more powerful, so do the lungs regenerate once cigarettes are gone.

Lungs Recouperate After No More Smoking:

WITHIN DAYS of the last cigarette, the upper airways of the lungs begin to regrow.

WITHIN WEEKS it’s noticeable how much better the lungs are functioning. This helps you to bring in
more oxygen for greater stamina and strength.

WITHIN MONTHS lung capacity rises by 30 percent.  Which means your workouts will yield better results.

WITHIN SIX MONTHS the tiny hairs in the upper airways have re-grown to the state of a non-smoker and
bronchial tissue is beginning to heal. This is important, so the lungs have a defense against toxins.

WITHIN YEARS, or as early as 9-12 months, according to the American Lung Association, persistent coughing, sinus infections, or other respiratory distresses associated with smoking, decline. Which means you feel better and have more time to enjoy life!

Travel Tips

Are you taking a long distance trip by car soon? Are you going on vacation and either driving there, renting a car once you get there, or staying at hotel(s) or rental property(ies)? Do you travel a lot by car or use rental properties as a normal routine? If you answer “yes” to any one of these questions, then here are a few tips for your safety:

1) When staying at a hotel/motel, remove your valuables from your vehicle (GPS unit, radar detector, cell phone, iPod, etc…).

2) Be aware of your surroundings when walking between your hotel/motel room and your vehicle (have any valuables already locked in your trunk before you pull into the parking lot).

3) Use any safety features a hotel/motel room offers (door latches/locks, safe, etc…).

4) Take a charged cell phone with you.
    a. Even if you don’t have a carrier, a cell phone can still call 911.
    b. Find a friend or family member who has an old cell phone they are no longer using if you don’t have one.

5) If you stop at a rest area for a nap, make sure there is a guard on duty and stay in a lit area close to where people will be.

6) Don't stop for disabled vehicles; use your cell phone and call authorities to come and assist them as it could be a setup for a robbery.

History of the "Horn of Plenty"

The horn of plenty, or also known as cornucopia, has been associated with Thanksgiving for generations; but have you ever wondered where it actually originated? The word cornucopia comes from two words: “cornu” means horn and “copia” means plenty, put the two together and you get the term we know today as “Horn of Plenty”.

The Horn of Plenty that is used today by many families to decorate their Thanksgiving table actually dates back to the 5thCentury BC. Today it is usually a basket that is curved and overflowing with brilliant colors of fruit, flowers, grains and whatever else the decorator desires, but in the beginning it really resembled a curved goat’s horn.

There are two versions of the origin of the horn that are the most common, both are from Greek mythology. The first version is about a feud between Hercules and the river-god, Archelous. During a battle when Archelous changed himself into a bull, Hercules tore off one of his horns. The horn was treated as a sacred object and filled it with beautiful flowers.

There second version is a little easier to understand, it is about Zeus. When he was born his mother sent him away to hide him from his father. She sent him to Cretewhere he was raised by some of the king's daughters. Zeus broke off one of Amalthea's horns, the goat that provided his milk. The horn had the power of becoming filled with whatever its owner desired. Zeus later gave the horn to the daughters as a way to say thank you and from then on it was known as the symbol of plenty.

Though today it has changed from a horn to a basket the original meaning remains the same. Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and/or friends and share plenty of food so it is fitting that a Thanksgiving table be decorated with a cornucopia, or horn of plenty, to symbolize abundance.

The 5 Languages of Love

Dr. Gary Chapman's book The 5 Love Languages was on the New York Times best seller list. This book reveals how to know what your love language is and what your spouse's love language is.  Imagine being able to do or say just the right thing to guarantee you'd make the other one feel loved?!  Learning each other's love language is the key!

The 5 Love Languages:

Words of Affirmation - Actions don’t always speak louder than words. If this is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” are important—hearing the reasons behind that love sends your spirits skyward. Insults can leave you shattered and are not easily forgotten.

Quality Time - In the vernacular of Quality Time, nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention. Being there for this type of person is critical, but really being there—with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby—makes your significant other feel truly special and loved. Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful.

Receiving Gifts - Don’t mistake this love language for materialism; the receiver of gifts thrives on the love, thoughtfulness, and effort behind the gift. If you speak this language, the perfect gift or gesture shows that you are known, you are cared for, and you are prized above whatever was sacrificed to bring the gift to you. A missed birthday, anniversary, or a hasty, thoughtless gift would be disastrous—so would the absence of everyday gestures.

Acts of Service - Can vacuuming the floors really be an expression of love? Absolutely! Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most want to hear: “Let me do that for you.” Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter.

Physical Touch - This language isn’t all about the bedroom. A person whose primary language is Physical Touch is, not surprisingly, very touchy. Hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face—they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial, while neglect or abuse can be unforgivable and destructive.

5 Easy Stretches You Can Do at Your Desk

Stretch the stress away without leaving your desk.

Stretching doesn’t just feel good. It actually does good.  Maintaining flexibility is important, especially if you sit at a desk all day. Stretching boosts energy, releases tension and stress and improves circulation.  This is good news because allowing stress to build up can weaken your immune system and make it harder for your body to fight off diseases.

So, take a few minutes out of your busy day to stretch the stress away. Try these quick and easy stretches without even leaving your desk.

Back extension and shoulder blade pinch
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and gently lean backward to the point of mild tension with your arms also reaching back and squeezed toward each other. Tighten shoulder blades, lower back muscles and hold. Repeat three times.\

Bridge stretch
Interlace your fingers with your palms pointing toward the sky, straighten your elbows and reach as far up as possible with both hands and hold for 20 seconds.

Forearm and wrist stretches
Extend one arm without bending the elbow. Bend your wrist upward, and use your other hand to gently pull your fingers back toward you and hold for 15-20 seconds. Release and bend the same wrist downward, gently pulling it down and toward you with the other hand. Hold for 15-20 seconds and repeat both stretches with your other arm.

Leg extensions
Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself and extend your legs straight out in front of you parallel to the floor. Flex and point your toes five times then release. Repeat three times.

Hamstring stretch
Stand with your feet crossed and gently bend forward at the hips and waist to the point of mild tension. Feel the stretch along the back of your rear leg. Hold for 15 seconds. Repeat with your other leg.

So next time you feel your muscles tightening or your eyes drooping, do your body a favor and stretch to recharge.

Some Pun Fun

A pun is defined by Webster's dictionary as:  "the humorous use of a word or words, formed or sounded alike but have different meanings, a play on words."

In early 18th century England a common practice when speaking was to answer in a single syllable, made from a larger word. People did it for fun. The word 'pundigrion' was coined to describe this kind of word-play. It's believed that this was the origin of our word 'pun'.  Paronomasia is the act or practice of punning.

Below are some of the most common variations on a pun, with some examples.
Daffynitions - words that sound like groups of other words. Here are a few:
     Oboe: An English tramp.
     Pasteurize: Too far to see.
Tom Swifties - Tom Swift was a fictional character in children's books by the author E. L. Stratemeyer in the early 1900's. These stories depicted Tom as a young genius, whose inventions took him to places all around the world. In these books, the author always avoided using the word 'said' whenever Tom spoke. Tom asserted, averred, chortled, declared, expostulated, grimaced, grinned... or if he ever actually 'said' something, he did it colourfully, as in 'Tom said, laughingly'. Eventually, someone decided to satirize this form of writing by using punning adverbs, and the Tom Swifty was invented!  An example: "Take the prisoner downstairs," Tom said condescendingly." The adverb 'condescendingly' makes a double pun on the related words 'con' (prisoner) and 'descending' (downstairs).
Here are some more:   "Let's go to McDonald's," said Tom archly.  "I know who turned off the lights," Tom hinted darkly.
Spoonerisms - Named after the Reverend W.A. Spooner (1844-1930), an Anglican clergyman, a 'spoonerism' is an unintential interchange of sounds in two or more words, with a humourous result. Here are examples:  "I have a half-formed wish in my mind." becomes "I have a half-warmed fish in my mind."    "A troop of boy scouts" becomes "A scoop of boy trouts."
Apparently Spooner was a nervous man who unintentionally mixed up words. Now this type of mixed up phrase has become a type of pun, named in his honour.
Sign of the Times - This is a more modern type of pun, and you've probably seen them before. They explain themselves.  Here are some examples:  In a butcher shop window: "Never a bum steer."  On a diaper service truck: "Rock a dry baby."  At a lumberyard: "Come see, come saw."  On a plumber's truck: "A flush beats a full house."
Definitions - as puns are clever transpositions of real words.  Some examples:
Archeologist: A man whose career lies in ruins.
Egotist: One who is me-deep in conversation.
Middle Age: When actions creak louder than words.
Palindromes - words or phrases which read the same backwards as forwards.  (The letters in same order, forwards or backwards.)  Example:  'A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!'
There are also the first words ever spoken:   'Madam, I'm Adam';  'Senile Felines'
The Working Word - needs no explanation!
I used to be a ballet dancer, but found it too-too difficult.
I used to be a carpenter, but then I got bored.
I used to work for H&R Block, but it was just too taxing.
I used to be a tennis instructor, but it just wasn't my racket.

Veterans Day

Veteran - a person who has served in a military force, especially one who has fought in a war.

As we celebrate Veterans Day this year, let us once again remember the millions in the military who have given their dedication, support, respect and even their lives to and for our country.  What they have willfully done in the name of the love for their country has given us our freedom today.

This isn't just another holiday to be regarded as one which allows us to be off school, work or look for sales in the stores.  Its history is one that deserves our respect, honor and reverence.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to ALL American veterans of all wars.

Ever wonder why such groups as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars offer poppies for a donation at this time and Memorial Day?  Poppies have long been associated with World War I memorials through the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. In the World War I battlefields of Belgium, poppies grew wild amid the ravaged landscape.  Our dead were buried in these poppy fields.  The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to be covered, thus allowing them to grow and to forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed during that and future wars.  The poppies offered by veterans are made by our veterans and are sold to raise money for their support.  They are to be worn as a sign of remembrance.

Next time you see a veteran outside the grocery store offering you a poppy, take a moment to stop and reflect on what their life's story may include ... what their loved ones endured while they served ... where their travels took them ... what conditions they experienced ... what their needs may be now.

A heartfelt, THANK YOU to the men and women in our military!    May you be honored, appreciated, and prayed for every day of the year.

God Bless Each of You!

22 Ways to Slash the Grocery Bill

With our busy lives and harried schedules, it's easy to forget the basics of wise grocery shopping. Here is a quick collection of the best tips for slashing your grocery bill.

1. Don't shop hungry. Studies find you will spend at least 17 percent more.
2. Shop with a list. Use the store's weekly sale ads found in the newspaper or the store's website as a guide and build your menus from there.
3. Go for loss-leaders. These are the items that are deeply discounted in order to get you through the door.
4. Don't buy anything that is not a sale item.
5. Know your prices. Keep a written record of the regular per-unit prices of the items you buy most often so you'll know whether a "special" is really a bargain.
6. Buy in season. Fruits and vegetables will be the best quality and the lowest price when they are in season.
7. Shop with cash. Take only the amount of cash you have decided to spend on one grocery trip. If you come across a fabulous bargain and don't have enough cash, you can always return to the store to stock up.
8. Carry a calculator. Keep a running total of the items in your cart so you won't be embarrassed at the checkout.
9. Shop at larger stores. While their regular prices might be higher, a supermarket will have the best sales.
10. Find a bakery outlet. These kinds of thrift stores offer wonderful bargains if you can be highly disciplined.
11. Buy in bulk. But remember: If you can't use it before it goes bad, it's a bad deal no matter how good the bargain was.
12. Don't overbuy your storage space.
13. "On sale" without a coupon is sometimes cheaper than the regular price with a coupon.
14. Buy the smallest size or quantity that the coupon allows for the greatest percentage of savings.
15. Always check expiration dates on food items. If you have a choice, choose the date farthest into the future.
16. Consider generic and store brands. Many times, the product is identical to the brand name except for the lower price.
17. Shop solo. Distractions can be costly.
18. Look high and low. Expensive brand names are purposely positioned at eye level.
19. Avoid individual-size packages. Buy the big container and divide into smaller portions at home.
20. Learn sale cycles. Study sale flyers until you recognize predictable cycles. Buy enough when it's on sale to last until the next sale.
21. Look for "two for one." These days, scanners always ring up each individual item, so if the deal is "two for one" you will likely be able to buy one for half-price. Check the store's policy.
22. Keep moving! One study reveals that the typical shopper spends about $1.75 for every minute spent in the store. Know why you're there, get what you need and get out!

Serenity

Serenity - The quality or state of being serene; clearness and calmness; quietness; stillness; peace.

As the holidays approach, many find themselves feeling not so festive.  One way of lifting the "blues" is to try to take one day at a time - and to be mindful of three poignant points in the following prayer:

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity

(1) to accept the things I cannot change;

(2) courage to change the things I can;

(3) and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world

as it is, not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right

if I surrender to His Will;

That I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with Him

Forever in the next.

Amen.

Feeling Lonely?

Loneliness is a state of mind rather than a measure of how many people you interact with. You can be overwhelmed with a feeling of loneliness in a bustling restaurant or a cheering football stadium, in a business meeting or a family gathering. You can feel contented, complete, and at peace with the world deep in a forest far from the nearest human. So what causes feelings of loneliness and how can you overcome them?

Loneliness is really a form of neediness, the feeling of needing some expression of companionship and support that you don't feel you are getting. You feel lonely when the state of your world doesn't appear to be as it should. We are most likely to feel lonely when we have lost companionship that we previously had - a loved one died, left us, or moved away; our family, social group, or employer has rejected us. We feel the contrast between how things are now and how they used to be better. The other cause of loneliness is comparison with the apparently happy social networks of others. Seeing others appearing to enjoy their connections with family, friends, and lovers, we long for those same pleasures.

Here are ten tips for coping with feelings of loneliness...
1. Focus on the present. Whenever you find yourself longing for the past, Stop. Bring your attention back to the present. You can't go back to high school and be the cheerleader or football hero again. You can't relive the college sorority or fraternity parties. Rather, look to the great opportunities for your life today and tomorrow.
2. Be yourself and be proud of yourself. You aren't the celebrity being hounded by the news media; you aren't the person down the street with a dozen cars parked out front day and night; you aren't anyone but yourself, and that is a wonderful thing. Be happy and proud that you are exactly who you are.
3. Learn to enjoy spending time completely alone. Once you can be comfortable alone, you will defeat your compulsive need for companionship. Take long silent walks in the woods or on the seashore. Consider going for a multi-day hike and sleeping alone under the stars.
4. Know the purpose of your life, and keep busy with activities that support your purpose. When you know that your life is directed toward an important purpose, the support and encouragement of others lessens in significance. It is much harder to feel lonely when you are actively engaged with tasks that further your vision for your life.
5. Be of service to others. Volunteering your time to those less fortunate has a number of benefits. You will feel good about yourself. You will realize that you really are one of the more fortunate people in the world. The bonus is that service organizations attract the kind of people who have the potential of becoming great friends.
6. Find a furry four-legged friend. If you don't already have a cat or dog, rescue one from your local animal shelter.
7. Join groups for the activities, and let the socializing be a bonus. Try a book, bridge, or sailing club; a kayaking, walking, or hiking group. Take lessons. Learn to dance, sing, play a musical instrument.
8. Be physically active. Walk, join the gym, try Latin Cardio Dance. The endorphins that exercise generates make you happier, and it's hard to feel lonely when you're happy.
9. Turn on happy music. Find the kind of music that makes you feel happy and turn up the volume. Dance to your music, sing to your music, let your music reverberate within you.
10. Know that your higher power is always with you. You are never alone when you accept that Spirit is always with you and within you. Have a conversation with your higher power today.

12 Ways to Create an Active Lifestyle

Get active!  Get moving!  Get healthier!

1. Forget the fads: Like diets, exercise fads come and go. When you think about a new workout, ask yourself: “Is this something I really enjoy doing?”

2. Be realistic: Any activity has to fit into your schedule and lifestyle. If you don’t belong to a gym or if you hate running, it’s time to look for some new activities.

3. Make a commitment: Write down some important reasons for being more active. Share a written story or verbal promise to be more physically active with your friends or family.

4. Start slow: Making drastic changes can be a recipe for failure. Small changes can make a big difference, if they last. Pick one change, like walking more, and make it a habit.

5. Be consistent: The human body responds well to consistency. For example, if you decide to walk more, make walking part of your daily routine – rather than an occasional activity.

6. Stick with it: Research suggests that it takes about 21 days for a behavior to become habit. If you want to starting walking more, make a plan to walk 30 minutes a day for 21 days.

7. Be flexible: Life is full of surprises and some times plans need to change. If you can’t get out in the morning, fit a 30 minute walk into a lunch break or go out after dinner.

8. Be creative: Make a list of all the possible ways to fit a 30 minute walk into your life – like walking a dog, walking with a friend, walking to the store, or walking around the mall.

9. Make a list of options: It’s always good to have options, like indoor ideas when it’s cold. Make a list of all the ways you like to move, so you’ll always have a fun option.

10. Plan for activity: There is always too much to do in our busy lives. Make room for fitness in yours by putting activity on your schedule.

11. Forgive yourself: If you miss a day of activity, it’s no big deal. Just put on your shoes and get you walk in today. The goal is at least 30 minutes of activity, at least 5 days a week.

12. Congratulate yourself: Becoming more active can be tough. Just think how long you’ve been sitting around. Give yourself a big pat on the back for any increases in physical activity!
