Best College Football Uniforms

Fox Sports announces their favorite college football uniforms.  Which team is your pick?

LSU - LSU is only one of two teams that get a pass on the purple and gold color combination (the Los Angeles Lakers are the other). LSU's flashy play that accompanies the uniforms is what makes the combination great in college football.

Florida - The Gators have a combination of royal blue jerseys and white pants or white jerseys and royal blue pants that fit well together. Both jersey combinations include the orange stripe to tie in to the orange helmet with the script Gators on it.

Auburn - The Tigers combine the navy blue, white and orange colors in a traditional manner that makes these uniforms pop. The striping on the helmet along with the Auburn University logo give the uniforms a classic feel.

Notre Dame - The Fighting Irish have great uniforms. You have to love the deep blue of the jerseys and the gold helmets look incredibly perfect. (The helmet shells are painted fresh gold every week.)

Georgia - Georgia is a team that doesn't try to duplicate other teams' uniforms to conform to a modern, "flashy" look. The result is a uniform that is exclusively "Georgia". Here is a look at other uniforms in college football that are unique to college football.

USC - USC keeps it simple. They have no updated helmet decal, no fancy piping just a good combination color and a traditional uniform look.

University of Oregon - Most people rip the Ducks for their somewhat "interesting" choices in uniform colors. The carbon-colored helmet is as unique as their alternate green, gold and black uniform combinations. While not at all traditional, the carbon color combination is actually pretty sleek.

Oklahoma - The red and white of the Sooners is nice but the best thing about the Sooners uniforms is the shine of the helmets. They must polish those puppies at halftime.

Virginia Tech - Virgina Tech uniforms has a nice, throwback look. The colored jerseys and white pants perfectly offset the orange stripes on the shoulder pad and helmets.

Penn State - The Penn State uniforms are simple and classy. The combination of navy blue and white looks great and the navy stripe on the helmet ties it all together.

UCLA - Powder blue is a hard color to pull off as a football player, but it suits the Bruins well. Aside from Oregon, UCLA has the most unique color combination with powder blue and gold. The script UCLA on the helmet also adds a throwback touch to the uniform look.

Texas - Texas' uniforms are just classic. The pants are pristine white and the helmet only rocks one of the most well-known symbols in college football. The double white stripe of the sleeves add to the retro feel of the uniforms.

Michigan - The "winged" helmet of the Wolverines is immediately recognizable and although the jersey and pants are solid colors, the combination is amazing! Michigan definitely has some of the most historic uniforms in college football.

Sell Your Home Quicker

As we prepare a home to go up for sale, there are certain things we can do that make BIG differences in obtaining a buyer:

~ Pricing - Find out what the home is worth. In today's market, buyers are looking for good value for their money. You will benefit from pricing the home reasonably.

~ Light - Showing a well lit home makes it look large and spacious. Clean drapes or take them down, clean windows and lampshades, increase the wattage in the light bulbs and trim trees and shrubs outside to allow more light in.

~ Closets - By emptying your closets to half full, you show there is ample space. Storage is a major concern for buyers. To see a closet half empty and organized gives the impression of more storage room.

~ Remove Personal Belongings - Give the buyer the benefit of imagining their own items in the home by taking your items out. Take down family pictures, plaques with sayings and knick knacks.

~ Pets - Not all buyers are pet lovers. Discreetly hide the food and water bowls, litter boxes and clean pet fur off of everything. Get rid of pet smells or pet stains on carpeting or flooring. If you have an Open House planned, take your pets out of the house for the day.

~ Kitchen - This is the most important room and one that can make or break a potential sale. Neutral colored walls help give a blank canvas to the buyer, to put their own colors in the room. Take away counter clutter. Buy one high end appliance to give the effect that everything is high end.

~ Updating - A complete makeover on your home is not necessary. Little subtle changes go a long way. Fix leaky faucets, change or clean drapes, clean grout, paint, replace cabinet hardware.

~ Show Ready - Have your home always ready to show. Keep it tidy, clean and uncluttered.

~ First Impression: Outside - As one is looking at your home the moment they pull in front of it, this is the first impression that cannot be repeated. Many times, the buyer has already made an opinion of the home before opening the front door. Spruce up the shrubs, put out colorful flowers, sweep walkways, clean the exterior of the home and clean the driveway.

Best College Football Mascots

Fox Sports announces their picks for the best college football mascots.  Is your favorite among these?

Uga VIII/ Hairy Dawg - Uga is an English bulldog (although the first UGA was a goat) and is certainly the most beloved and well-known mascot in college football. Past Uga mascots have flowers laid on their graves before every home game. The most recent Uga, Uga VIII, unfortunately passed away on February 4, 2011.

Sebastian the Ibis - Sebastian the Ibis usually leads the Hurricane players onto the football field before games. An ibis is a bird found in the Everglades that's known for its ability to survive hurricanes. Sebastian the Ibis is an ever-present mascot who's always found celebrating under the goalposts after every Miami extra point and field goal.

Mike the Tiger - LSU has two "Mikes". Mike the (live) Tiger is kept in a pen in the back of the stadium before it's rolled out in a cage close to the visitor's locker room where the players have to pass by him on the way to the field. Mike the (costumed) Tiger is the "fan-friendly" version of the mascot that appears on the field during games.

Big Al - Big Al is the costumed mascot for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. According to legend, as Alabama took the field, the sheer size of the players caused the ground to rumble which caused an excited fan to cry out: "Hold you your horses, the elephants are coming!" So started the elephant tradition at Alabama.

The Duck - The University of Oregon's mascot is definitely recognizable around the college football world. To date, the mascot is the only duck that represents a major college football program. Although the choice of a duck as a mascot might seem relatively benign, The Duck is known for a feisty attitude — and pushups after an Oregon score.

Chief Osceola - Florida State's mascot truly knows how to make an entrance. Before every home game, Chief Osceola rides into the stadium on a horse, Renegade, and plants a flaming spear at midfield. The entire setup, outfit, and tradition have been approved by the Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida.

Brutus the Buckeye - The Ohio State University mascot didn't come into existence until 1965, but it's still as identifiable as any mascot in college football. Brutus is a student dressed in Buckeye colors with a headpiece resembling an Ohio Buckeye nut.

Traveler - Traveler, the white horse that appears at all home games with a trojan warrior astride, is the mascot for the University of Southern California Trojans. One of the more famous college mascots, the current horse serving as the USC mascot is Traveler VII. The rider, while often mistaken for Tommy Trojan, is simply designated as a "regal Trojan warrior.

Leprechaun - The Notre Dame mascot for the Fighting Irish fits the culture and spirit of the University. Notre Dame fans thoroughly enjoy their mascot. Here's a look at other beloved mascots — considered the "best" in college football.

Ralphie - Colorado's Ralphie the Buffalo is the most intimidating mascot and the one that inspires the most awe from fans and foes alike. Just before the start of the game and before the second half, a 1,100 to 1,300-pound buffalo leads the team onto the field in a semi-controlled 20-to-25 mile per hour sprint. The animal has handlers who hang on for dear life and try to keep it somewhat contained, and while it could probably tear off and do whatever it wanted if it was inclined to do so, there's never been a problem.

Smokey - Looking for a mascot in 1953, the University of Tennessee brought out several dogs onto the field and let the fans pick which one they wanted by cheering loudest for the one they liked the best. Blue Smokey fired out a howl/bark that got the fans fired up, and ever since, a blue tick bloodhound has been the team's sideline symbol.

Bucky Badger - While live mascots are fantastic, costumed mascots can bring entertainment as well. Originally Wisconsin had a real badger roaming the sidelines on a leash, but the school had to stop the tradition in 1940 after the animal was too wild and mean. A cartoon character, Buckingham U. Badger was created, and the rest is history.

Sooner Schooner - Now, the University of Oklahoma's "mascot" is not a black and white issue. While the Sooner Schooner isn't really a mascot in the traditional sense, it is the football team's symbol and identity. Technically named the school's mascot in 1980, a covered wagon is pulled by two Shetland ponies after every Oklahoma score.

Bevo XIV - From the nickname to the Hook 'em Horns hand gesture, no symbol is more associated with a team than Bevo the longhorn steer is with Texas. The shape of the Longhorn's head and horns gives rise to the school's hand symbol and saying, Hook 'em Horns. The current Bevo is fourteenth in the line of longhorns that have been the university's mascot.

Are You a Good Listener?

How important is it for you to be a good listener? How important is it that you be able to take in information and stay attuned? It is essential.
Listening accounts for 40% of your communication time. It's also the way that you tune into and stay connected with others.

Good listening is powerful - an act of caring. Speaking freely with someone who you know is listening can be transforming. It helps you tap into your intuition and access an inner 'knowing' that might otherwise be unreachable. In 1998, during a professional transition, I consulted with a coach for the first time. The greatest gift that he gave me was his caring attention. He listened and helped me tune into myself. I clarified what I wanted, developed an action plan, and moved forward at an accelerated pace. Because my coach listened and helped me recognize my deepest wishes, I chose an excellent career path and never looked back.
Good listening isn't easy. Most of us get little, if any, instruction in this area. It is assumed (erroneously) that because we can hear, we can also listen, and therefore we need no further training. We may carry poor listening skills into adult life, unaware of our shortcoming. This can take its toll in our professional and personal lives.
Are you a skillful listener, or do you have poor listening habits such as...
- Interrupting the speaker.
- Not looking at the speaker.
- Rushing the speaker.
- Topping the speaker's story with "That reminds me..." or "That's nothing, let me tell you about..."
- Getting ahead of the speaker and finishing her/his thoughts.

Even if you answer yes to just one of these, your listening skills will benefit from some first aid. Here are 3 ways to tune in to others more effectively:
Choose to improve - Awareness is the beginning of change. Once you've become aware that your listening habits could use some tweaking, make the decision to take action. Practice listening as you do with any other skill that you want to improve. When you notice that your attention is drifting or you're interrupting the speaker, forgive yourself for slipping, and refocus.
Look like you're listening - Show your partner that you're genuinely interested in what s/he has to say. Use frequent eye contact. Lean slightly toward the person talking. Show with nods that you're following what s/he is talking about.
Sounds like you're listening - Use prompting phrases to keep yourself engaged and show your partner that you're actively tuned in. These can include: Hmmm..., Oh?, Go ahead... Tell me more... Provide verbal summaries as your partner speaks. You can do this by repeating back what you heard them say: "What I hear you saying is....", "Is that right?", "As I understand you, you...", "It sounds like..."
Becoming a better listener is an act of caring. It can help you get closer to family members, negotiate an agreement, or provide better customer service. To get started, try one of the strategies suggested above.

Best College Football Stadiums

Fox News has pronounced the following stadiums "the best college football stadiums".  How many have you been to?

Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Built below ground and muggy for much of the season, “The Swamp” routinely sells out and hosts rabid fans that love their Florida Gators. The Swamp got its nickname from then-coach Steve Spurrier who claimed "a swamp is hot and sticky and can be dangerous. Only Gators get out alive." Ben Hill Griffin Stadium has been known as The Swamp ever since.

Tiger Stadium - Florida may have “The Swamp,” but Death Valley lives up to its name for opposing teams, as LSU fans scream and shout beyond belief. It's easy to see why opposing players can get rattled here. Tiger stadium gets loud ... very loud. The fans have plenty of time to prepare to go bonkers as Tiger Stadium mostly hosts night games, unlike most other venues.

Bryant-Denny Stadium - Alabama boasts a passionate fan base that can get louder than most. If you can imagine 90,000 plus fans stomping their feet and the sound reverberating throughout the stadium — it might be a bit intimidating. And when the video board displays inspirational words from legendary coach Bear Bryant, it only adds fuel to the fire.

Doak Campbell Stadium - From Chief Osceola famously throwing his flame-burning spear into the ground at midfield before kickoff to the FSU war chant (a chant that has been adopted by other sports teams), this is one of most intimate and underrated venues, and a beautiful campus for tailgating.

Memorial Stadium - There are few more impressive introductions in college football than when the Tigers rub Howard’s Rock and burst down the hill and onto the field to a deafening roar and an endless sea of orange-clad faithful. Clemson's Memorial Stadium also goes by the moniker "Death Valley".

Notre Dame Stadium - Notre Dame Stadium is the football home of the Fighting Irish. The stadium is patterned, on a smaller scale, after the University of Michigan's Michigan Stadium. The stadium is known for "Touchdown Jesus" — a nickname given to a mural of a resurrected Jesus that is visible from inside the stadium.

Neyland Stadium - While Tennessee has a unique tailgating experience that includes floating on the river with the Vol Navy, the real fun starts when 100,000 sing “Rocky Top” — a song that will stay in your head for the next several days — you’ll definitely know that you're in a special football stadium.

Michigan Stadium - “The Big House” has the biggest capacity in college football. It’s a fabulous, tight-knit, treasured setting, and it’s quite amazing they manage to get 108,000-plus Wolverines fans snug in here.

Beaver Stadium - The Penn State Nittany Lions fans really only eat, sleep and breathe football. Student tickets for the season sell out in mere minutes. Few stadium settings are better on a Saturday afternoon than Happy Valley, from the plethora of tailgating parties outside to pure White Out conditions on the inside.

Jordan Hare Stadium - Jordan Hare boasts immaculate grounds, a grand atmosphere, and rabid passion that runs through its fan base. Few small towns have a tighter connection to their school than Auburn, where fans and townspeople toilet-paper “Toomer’s Corner” after huge wins.

Sanford Stadium - Georgia fans have to be some of the most intense fans in college football. They love to watch their football between the privet hedges that completely surround the field in Athens. When Georgia wins, Bulldog fans party even more insanely than they do the rest of the time.

Autzen Stadium - Autzen Stadium is well-known for being one of the loudest college football stadiums around. You never know what color combination the Ducks will play in and when you need to relieve yourself, a “Welcome to the Wetlands” sign greets you at the door.

Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was born in the town of Chiaravalle, Italy.  (1870 - 1952)  She is the legacy behind the Monetssori School and is sometimes referred to as the one who discovered and revealed the qualities of children different from and higher than those usually attributed to them.  When she began her work, large groups of children were supposed to do the same thing at the same time and in the same way. She knew there was a better way to teach children. She based most of her approach to teaching on truths about human nature. E. Mortimer Standing, a former associate of Montessori's wrote, "No one has so completely understood the soul of the child in its depth and greatness, in its immense potentialities, and in the mysterious law of its development.".  Montessori considered the child often at a disadvantage because adults fail to realize that children possess knowing and willing faculties, which are greater than their ability to express themselves; therefore, she emphasizes the importance of trying to understand the child. From the hands to the mind is an expression often used in Montessori training. "The materials used by the senses are a doorway to the mind."
Through giving children some freedom in a specially prepared environment that was rich in activities, children of 4-6 years learned to read on their own, chose to work rather than play most of the time, loved order and silence, and developed a real social life in which they worked together instead of competing against one another. In Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook, it describes a typical room found in the Montessori school system. There is usually a central room for intellectual work with some small rooms off to the side. A lot of outside space and the choice to work outside. The furniture in the room is light so the children can arrange it how they are comfortable. Cabinets containing items the children could use were set low so the children could reach them. When it was time for their meals, they were to help prepare their place at a table, wash their hands, and also clean up after a meal.
The book also gives a lot of little exercises for the children to do which will help them in three major focuses in this method which include motor education, sensory education, and language. Montessori felt it was necessary for a teacher to guide a child with out them being able to feel her presence too much. The teacher was never supposed to be an obstacle between the child and the experience. The 1912 first edition of Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook was sold out (5,000 copies) in four days.
The basic Montessori concepts are pretty well known by now.
1 - The teacher must pay attention to the child, rather than the child paying attention to the teacher.
2 - The child proceeds at his own pace in an environment controlled to provide means of learning.
3 - Imaginative teaching materials are the heart of the process.
4 - Each of them is self-correcting, thus enabling the child to proceed at his own pace and see his own mistakes.
If you were to look inside a Montessori classroom, you would get the impression of "controlled chaos" because each child would be quietly working at his private encounter with whatever learning task he or she chose. Montessori often reminded teachers in her course, "When you have solved the problem of controlling the attention of the child, you have solved the entire problem of education."  Maria's theories of the sensitive periods in the development of a child were new to people at this time, however, now they seem to correspond with what we consider to be the "needs" of a child at different stages of their development.
In Maria's book, The Montessori Method, she further describes her system. Educators in the field set up special environments to meet the needs of the students in three age groups: two and a half years, two and a half to six years, and six and a half to twelve years. The students learn through activities that involve exploration, manipulations, order, repetition, abstraction, and communication. The teacher is to encourage children in the first two age groups to use their senses to explore and manipulate materials in their immediate environment. Children in the last age group deal with abstract concepts based on their newly developed powers of reasoning, imagination, and creativity.
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle described her as, "a woman who revolutionized the educational system of the world...the woman who taught the idiot and the insane to read and write - whose success has been so wonderful that the Montessori method has spread into nation after nation..."
Maria managed to succeed in school, go to college, and become the first woman in Italy to graduate from medical school. Maria was almost eighty-two when she died in Noordwijk, Holland in 1952.  It was written that Maria was, "no longer considered a major influence in education, but a historical relic," when she died.

Inspirational Quotes

When the National Science Foundation asked the "breakthrough" scientists what they felt was the most favorable factor in their education, the answer was almost uniformly, "intimate association with a great, inspiring teacher".  ~  R. Buckminster Fuller

I had assumed that the earth, the spirit or the earth, noticed exceptions - those who want only damage it and those who do not.  But the earth is wise, it has given itself into the keeping of all, and all are therefore accountable.   ~ Alice Walker

Most people think of peace as a state of nothing bad happening, or nothing much happening.  Yet if peace is to overtake us and make us the gift of serenity and well-being, it will have to be the state of something good happening.  ~ E.B White, "Unity"

Every morning is a fresh beginning.  Every day is the world made new ... I have lived all my life up to this moment, to come to this day.  This moment - this day - is as good as any moment in all eternity.  I shall make of this day ... a heaven on earth.  This is my day of opportunity.  ~ Dan Custer

"The world doesn't fear a new idea.  It can pigeonhole and idea.  But it can't pigeonhole a real new experience."  "The greatest virtue in life is real courage that knows how to face facts and live beyond them."  ~ D. H. Lawrence

History is not, of course, a cookbook offering pretested recipes.  It teaches by analogy, not by maxims.  It can illuminate the consequences of actions in comparable situations, yet each generation must discover for itself what situations are in fact comparable.  ~ Henry Kissinger

What the world needs is not romantic lovers who are sufficient unto themselves, but husbands and wives who live in communities, relate to other people, carry on useful work, and willingly give time and attention to their children.  ~ Margaret Mead

"A cloudy day, or a little sunshine, have as great an influence on many constitutions as the most real blessings or misfortunes."  "It is ridiculous for any man to criticize the works of another if he has not distinguished himself by his own performances."  ~ Joseph Addison

"Music is the universal language of mankind."  "Believe me, every heart has its secret sorrow which the world knows not; and oftentimes we call a man cold, when he is only sad."  ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

If you can react the same way to winning and losing, that's a big accomplishment.  That quality is important because it stays with you the rest of your life, and there's going to be a life after tennis that's a lot longer than your tennis life.  ~ Chris Evert

"Courage is not simply not one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality."  "The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.  ~ C. S. Lewis

Clouds.  Think of the cooling shadows of summer which benevolent nature spreads over her darling forests and gardens - summer shadows of wonderful depth and brilliancy like the wings of a mother bird over her young.  ~ John Muir

Word Fun

Our English language is not one without double meanings!  Here is a fun look at some of the challenges to learning it!!

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce.
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it, English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is is a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?  People recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? Your house can burn up as it burns down; you fill in a form by filling it out; an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this:
There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'.

It's easy to understand UP meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?  Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends.  And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house, and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.  To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.  We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary.
In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.
When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP!
