Caution Signs of Swimming Water

As you descend upon that enticing body of water, there are several danger signs to pique your caution radar:

Concerning Swimming Pools:

~ Cloudy Water – this suggests poor chemical maintenance of the pool water. Not only is it unbalanced in its chemicals, this produces a visual hazard. If someone is under water and unable to come up, they can’t be easily seen or rescued.
~ Life Guard Distracted – often times it happens – there is an attractive swimmer the life guard decides to flirt with. There is even a chance they take a quick moment on their cell phone to talk or text.
~ Pre-Potty Trained Babies – even traces of body waste can contaminate the whole pool. Ingesting this is cause for severe sickness.
~ Crowded Pool – “the more the merrier” isn’t always so true for a pool situation. The more people, the more multiples of bacteria, germs and viruses that are in the water. Too many people also take away from the life guards’ ability to be attentive to each person.

Concerning Lakes and Oceans:

Algae in a Lake – this appears as a green slime floating on the water. It also has an odor to it. Let you nose and eyes be your guide. If it looks and/or smells offensive, stay out of the water. This breeds toxic cyan bacteria and can be very detrimental to humans and your pets too.
~ Ocean Currents – one way to tell if there is a dangerous current is by watching the flow of the water with debris/seaweed in it. If the debris is floating back into the ocean and not washing ashore, there is a riptide. This can be quite powerful and even the best and strongest of swimmers can succumb to it’s intensity to pull you out to the deeper water.

Too Hot? Ideas to Keep Cool

The extensive heat sweeping our nation is of concern for young and old alike. Dehydration and heat related illnesses are especially dangerous to infants, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Remember, our beloved pets need protection also.  They are just as susceptible to heat related problems and sickness.
Some helpful hints in dealing with the heat:

~ Try to stay indoors away from the sun and heat sources.
~ Drink plenty of water and drinks that provide electrolytes such as sports drinks.
~ If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, go to places that do have it. Movie theaters, stores, library, malls, or other public places that are air conditioned will provide great relief from the heat.
~ Avoid alcohol and caffeine. These promote dehydration.
~ In your home, use fans to circulate the air, even if you do have air conditioning.
~ Shower or bathe with cool water frequently.
~ Mist your body with a fan that attaches to a water bottle. Fill the bottle with ice water. Or fill a small spray bottle with ice water to do the same.
~ Try not to use your oven. Prepare cold salads, fruits and other dishes that are a cool fare.
~ Cool your body by wearing a hat dampened with ice water.
~ Store bottled water in the freezer and have it with you when you go outside.
~ Put your lotion bottles in the refrigerator so they are cooling when you apply the lotion.
~ Wear loose fitting clothing.
~ Cotton fabrics are cooler than polyester for your clothes.
~ When outside, take precaution of the sun’s rays and wear sunscreen. Being hot and sun burned is a dangerous combination.

Rainy Day Activities

Lately, here in Florida, we have had our summer rains most every day. It’s known to be quite intense at times, with alternating downpours and drizzles. The thunder claps are loud, the lightning so bright at times, one can see it with closed eyes!

How do you spend your indoor time?

Besides the obvious cleaning projects or organizing cupboards and closets, here are some alternate option ideas:

~ Fill the “over the miles” gap with friends and relatives. Correspond with them. Write a letter, note or send a card.
~ Bake. Make a cake, cookies, bread or that recipe you’ve been meaning to try for awhile.
~ Catch up on reading. Have a book you’ve tried to start but just never have? Break it open.
~ Scrapbooking. This is a time consuming activity great for hours of staying at home time!
~ Crafts. Always great for stress release and fulfilling!
~ Puzzles. Put some music on, set the ambiance of serenity.
~ Movies. Set your sights on some movies to pass the time.
~ Board Games. What a great way to gather the family together!
~ Nap! Wow, imagining the wonder of a daytime nap? If it’s something you don’t usually do, it’s a real treat!
~ Clip magazine articles. Have a stack of magazines you are saving because of interesting articles? Clip them and put them into a notebook, then recycle the magazines.
~ Cook. Comfort foods feel SO good on a rainy day. Mac and cheese, cinnamon buns, mashed potatoes and gravy; you know what you like!
~ Sew. Create a new fashion for your home or yourself.
~ Fill photo albums. This is yet another time consuming activity. It’s always one that brings a wonderful feeling of accomplishment!
~ Play music. Are you a budding or accomplished musician? Fill your home with merry melodies!
~ Groom your pet.  Bathe, comb, pamper your beloved companion.
~ Teach your pet new tricks.  Nothing says "I love you" more than spending time with this delightful part of your family.
~ Take pictures.  Capture the ambiance of the storms.  The gentle rains or lightning when it strikes!

Of course, there is always shopping for those who brave the weather. Or go for a walk in the gentle rain!

Fun Birthday Facts

Birthdays...we all celebrate them, whether with excitement or dread. But how much do you really know about the occasion?

What Month Were You Born?
More people celebrate their birthdays in July, August, and September than during any other months of the year. August leads with 9% of all recorded births. In the United States, the most common birth date is October 5th and the least common is May 22nd.

A Pricey Piece of Paper
Rumor has it that former Beatles member Paul McCartney's birth certificate is the most expensive on record, no pun intended. It was purchased at auction in March 1997 for $84,146 US dollars. Maybe it will show up on PBS's "Antiques Roadshow" some day.

That's A Lot of Cake!
In 1989, the world's largest birthday cake was baked for the city of Fort Payne, Alabama's centennial celebration. It weighed 128,238 pounds, with 16,209 pounds of icing. Scales in Fort Payne must have been groaning the morning after that party!

Sending Greeting Cards
Over 1 billion birthday cards are sent every year in the United States - that's about 60% of the everyday greeting card industry! On average, each person receives 7 birthday cards.

Party On!
How much did you spend on your last milestone birthday party? Did you hire a DJ? The Sultan of Brunei paid $27.2 million US dollars to entertain his guests when he celebrated his 50th birthday, July 13, 1996. More than half of that amount, $16 million, was paid to Michael Jackson for three concerts.

"Happy Birthday To You..."
Two sisters from Louisville, KY, Mildred and Patti Hill, are credited with writing in 1893 what would become the most popular song of all time. In 1969, astronauts on board Apollo IX sang "Happy Birthday," making it the first song performed in outer space. Be careful where you belt out this song though - it's under copyright, and public performance of the song without permission is technically illegal!

Breathe In, Breathe Out
If you take an average of 30 breaths each minute, you will have taken 15,768,000 breaths from one birthday to the next. Please don't forget to save at least one big breath to blow out all the candles on your next cake.

The History of Birthday Cards

The oldest known actual greeting card was made in the 1400s in England and was a handmade, hand-delivered Valentine card.

Prior to the development of the calendar, birthdays were generally not celebrated since a way to track time was not yet devised. It was around the time that the calendar was invented when birthdays began being recognized and the desire to celebrate them became more widespread. However, in those early days, birthdays were only celebrated by the more prominent and wealthy families in society.

In the mid-1800s, exchanging birthday greeting cards turned into a more common practice. It began in England and became more attractive around 1840 when the first postage stamp was issued. With the perfection of a more economical printing process in the 1850s, sending birthday cards became more affordable and thus, more popular.

For many years, greeting cards were imported from England to America. Louis Prang, known as "The Father of the American Greeting Card," was a German immigrant who opened a small printing business in Boston in 1856. He perfected his printing processes over time and in 1875 began producing cards. By 1881, Prang was producing more than 5 million cards each year, thus contributing major growth to the industry.

The greeting card industry took a down turn in the latter part of the century but picked up again in the early 1900s when many of the greeting card manufacturers still in business today were founded. Color printing processes were developed in the early 1930s and led to an explosion of growth in the industry. The introduction of humorous cards in the 1950s and general purpose cards in the 1980s were events that contributed to growth spurts in the industry as well.

Today, birthday greeting cards are estimated to represent 60% of the total annual card sales. While sending birthday cards began its history somewhat tentatively, today it is one of the most time-honored and cherished traditions in our nation.

Fresh Herbs

When to Pick or Purchase Herbs
Purchase herbs close to the time you plan to use them. When growing herbs in your own garden the ideal time for picking is in the morning after the dew has dried but before the sun gets hot. This helps ensure the best flavor and storage quality. Annual herbs can be harvested down to about four inches tall and they still will regrow for use later in the season. For perennial herbs, don’t take off more than a third of the plant at any given time.

How to Store Fresh Herbs
To extend the freshness of herbs, snip off the ends of the stems. Place herbs in a tall glass with an inch of water, like cut flowers. Cover them loosely with a plastic bag to allow for air circulation. Place them in the refrigerator and change the water daily. Herbs may last a week or more stored this way.

How to Wash Herbs
Wash herbs when you are ready to use them. Wash smaller amounts of herbs thoroughly under running water. Shake off moisture or spin dry in a salad spinner. Pat off any remaining moisture with clean paper towels.

If you’re washing a larger amount of herbs at one time, treat them as you would salad greens. Place in a clean sink or deep bowl filled with cold water and swish around. Lift from the water and transfer to another bowl so dirt and grit remain in the water.

When Substituting Fresh Herbs for Dried Herbs
A general rule when using fresh herbs in a recipe is to use 3 times as much as you would use of a dried herb. When substituting, you’ll often be more successful substituting fresh herbs for dried herbs, rather than the other way around. For example, think potato salad with fresh vs. dried.

How to Prepare Herbs for Cooking
For most recipes, unless otherwise directed, mince herbs into tiny pieces. Chop with a chef’s knife on a cutting board or snip with a kitchen scissors. Some recipes may direct you to cut large leaves, such as basil, “chiffonnade-style” or into thin strips. An easy way to do this is to stack several leaves (about 3 to 5), roll into a tight roll, then cut into thin (1/16 to 1/8 inch) strips with a sharp knife.

For herbs with sturdier stems, such as marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage and thyme, you can strip off the leaves by running your fingers down the stem from top to bottom. With small-leaved plants such as thyme, you can use both leaves and stems for cooking early in the season. Later in the season, as the stems become tougher, use just the leaves. For herbs with tender stems, such as parsley and cilantro, it’s OK if you snip some of the stem in with the leaves when you’re cutting these herbs.

When to Add Herbs During Food Preparation
Unlike dried herbs, fresh herbs are usually added toward the end in cooked dishes to preserve their flavor. Add the more delicate herbs — basil, chives, cilantro, dill leaves, parsley, marjoram and mint — a minute or two before the end of cooking or sprinkle them on the food before it’s served. The less delicate herbs, such as dill seeds, oregano, rosemary, tarragon and thyme, can be added about the last 20 minutes of cooking. Obviously, for some foods, such as breads, batters, etc., you’ll need to add herbs at the beginning of the cooking process.

Fresh herbs can be added to refrigerated cold foods several hours before serving. Allow time (at least a couple of hours, if possible) for cold foods with herbs to chill helps the flavors to blend.

Rainy Day Driving Tips

Rain adds risk to driving.  As we take into consideration how the roads become slick and dangerous, here are some helpful reminders on how to drive in the rain.

Driving tips for the rain:

If you MUST travel during the rain, slow down!  Initially, the beginning rains mix with the oils on the road and it's very slippery.

Hang up the cell phone!

Turn your lights on!  Day or night!  This will enable you to see better, and allow you to be seen better. (It is Florida law and safer to drive in the rain with your headlights on. You will see signs for this - "Windshield wipers on, lights on".)

Do not use your cruise control as this can add chances of hydroplaning.

Remember the "Four Second Rule".  This is when your following distance is four seconds behind the car in front of you.  Increase this time in the rain!

Do not drive with your your hazard lights on (these are when the signal lights are blinking simultaneously).  These actually indicate the car is STOPPED - not moving, and can be quite misleading to other drivers - and dangerous!

As puddles form along the sides of the roads, in multi lane roads, stay toward the middle of the road. Be mindful of other drivers who may be going a little faster than you, and let them pass.

Night driving produces other obstacles as the glare of oncoming headlights is amplified on your windshield.  Take caution.

Avoid going through deep puddles.  Find a different route.

Take caution to pull off the road if wind and rain conditions are too extreme.

Extrovert vs. Introvert

By Erica R. Deligne

The world seems to be divided into two different types of people, the extrovert and the introvert. But why do some individuals feel more confident while others are silent and shy?

Carl Jung popularized the notion that people fall into two attitude types: introversion and extroversion. These two elements of the human body are both physical and mental aspects that give us reasons to most of our actions.

Most people utilize elements of both introversion and extroversion in their daily lives. However, researchers at the College of William and Mary say there is generally a dominant personality trait that reflects how the individual prefers to work or deal with the environment, especially when that person is under stress.

Extroverts make up between 60 to 70 percent of society and introverts account for 20 to 30 percent, according to Dr. Ed Diener from the University of Illinois.

An extrovert is a person who thinks in a way that centers on and around the object, the object being a task or a person. They feel the most energized through interactions with others and feel the most drained or down when they are alone.

Unlike extroverts, introverts get their energy from themselves and are drained by people. An introvert is a person who thinks in a way that centers on his or her own feelings and thoughts about a situation.

Introverts are energized by spending time on solitary activities and will find being around many people at once bothers them.

Not all introverts are shy and mousy. Some can be assertive and socially confident, but prefer activities that involve inner experience and introspection. Other introverts have a lack of self-confidence when socializing with strangers.

Recent studies at the University of Iowa have shown signs of different brain activity in introverts and extroverts. They say introversion and extroversion is not something grown into or born with, but simply an indication of brain functions.

"We found more evidence that people might be shy or outgoing because of the way their brains are structured, not because of experiences they've had," Debra L. Johnson, a research scientist in psychology at the University of Iowa, said.

Johnson's research reveals that introverts have more activity in the frontal lobes of the brain and in the front thalamus, and extroverts show more activity in the posterior thalamus.

Introverts get more of their stimulation internally and the front thalamus provides them with the remembering, planning and processing of their own ideas.

The posterior thalamus is more involved in sensory processing such as listening, watching or driving, which attends to the extrovert's need when being socially active and seeking sensation from outside sources.

ABOUT GROWING OLDER...
~ Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.
~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra.
~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it's such a nice change from being young.
~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.
~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf.

Summer Fun in the Water! Take the Kids Swimming!

By: Leigh Felesky

One, two, three, jump! There’s nothing like the cool sensation of water on a hot summer’s day. And there are many benefits for your family. Swimming and water safety are important survival skills everyone should know. Plus, learning to move in water offers a low-resistance physical activity, perfect for building muscle and staying fit. If you can take the kids to the beach, playing in the sand encourages fine motor development, imaginative play and creativity. And on top of all the benefits, playing in the water is tons of fun!

Choose the right venue.  There are many different types of pools suitable for different age levels. If you have a younger child, try a wading pool. For an older child, but a beginner swimmer, choose a shallow pool to avoid the worry of the child jumping in the deep end. If you’re going to a lake or to the beach, find the best place for families to swim—preferably with a life guard—and be sure to take all the necessary safety equipment such as life jackets. Remember, sand is great for kids and will keep them having fun and learning for hours.

Make it fun.  Wherever you go, bring the appropriate floats, water wings, balls and equipment. To help beginner swimmers feel more secure, bring rafts and floats. For older kids who want to play games in the water, you can buy basketball nets and other equipment at most sports stores. And don’t forget to bring buckets, shovels and sand toys too--not only will kids love to play with them, these activities help to develop fine motor and measuring skills.

Be safe.
Constant supervision.  You always need to keep a close eye on your children in any water, even shallow wading pools. According to the Red Cross, drowning is the second cause of accidental death among children, especially those under the age of five. Despite obvious precautions such as wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD), taking water safety lessons and staying in shallow water, the best protection is an attentive parent.

PFDs and life jackets.  Flotation devices such as a proper lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD) are essential. (Remember, a PFD is less bulky, but unlike a life jacket it will not necessarily roll a person into position where the head is out of the water.) Make sure the floatation device fits your child. All buckles and snaps should work and it should be comfortable. The Red Cross encourages attaching a whistle to the front of the PFD or lifejacket. Brightly colored floatation devices are better for visibility. For more advice, check out swimming programs and water safety programs in your area.

Set the stage.  Clearly outline all the rules and guidelines to children before they go swimming. Explain where they can dive and where they can swim. Also, go over the rules of the pool—for example, no running on the deck, no pushing and only one person on the diving board at a time.

Remember.  Finally, teach all children that they must stop and wait for permission to go into the water and know where it is safe to enter.

Is This Still Good?

Stretch the shelf life of your food with these money-saving tips.

The average family throws out nearly 122 pounds of food per month and wastes $590 per year on food that eventually spoils. However, many common perishables remain safe way past their sell-by dates. From milk and eggs to gorgeous summer produce, find out which storage tips will do the trick and try these tips to make food last longer.

Lunchmeat
DO: store meat in the meat compartment—it is specially designed to keep cool air in and can help meat last 3-5 days past the sell-by date.
DON'T: forget to reseal the package.

Fresh Herbs
DO: wrap in paper towels to absorb moisture, and place in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer.
DON'T: refrigerate basil, which is damaged by the cold; stand it in water on a sunny windowsill.

Eggs
DO: store eggs in their original container on a refrigerator shelf. This will make them last for 3-4 weeks past the sell-by date.
DON'T: store eggs on the door, where eggs are vulnerable to temperature fluctuations.

Tomatoes
DO: Store cherry and grape tomatoes in their original containers in the refrigerator. Ripen large varieties on the counter—cold temperatures halt color, flavor, and nutrient development. Once bright red, store them in the fridge.
DON'T: place ripe tomatoes near vegetables, as they give off ethylene.

Yogurt
DO: store yogurt at around 39°F, an appropriate temp for your fridge. This will help it keep 10-14 days past its sell-by date.
DON'T: be deterred by separation—simply stir and enjoy.

Milk
DO: hit the dairy aisle right before checking out to minimize the amount of time milk is left unrefrigerated, and store it on a shelf pushed far back, where the air is coldest.
DON'T: store it closer to or on the door; the air tends to be warmer there.

Mushrooms
DO: place unwashed mushrooms in a paper bag in your refrigerator. Keeping them cold and dry disfavors bacterial growth and the paper bag protects against dehydration.
DON'T: wash prior to storage.

Alliums (onions, shallots, garlic)
DO: store in a warm, dry place like your countertop.
DON'T: place them near ripening fruits; alliums contain strong sulfur compounds, which taint other produce when kept in close vicinity. Also, don’t store them in the fridge—exposing them to cold and moisture will initiate rotting and rooting.

Watermelons
DO: ripen on your countertop for about a week, which nearly doubles the melon’s lycopene and beta-carotene levels, according to a USDA study . Pop it in the fridge a day before eating.
DON'T: store it near other fruits. Watermelon is easily damaged by ethylene, a gas released by fruits that speeds up deterioration.

Stone Fruits (nectarines, cherries, plums, peaches)
DO: ripen on the counter and transfer to the refrigerator. To prolong the life of stone fruits, remove their pits and boil the fruits in simple syrup for a few minutes, cool, and store in an airtight container in the freezer.
DON'T: refrigerate these fruits while they’re still firm or they’ll never ripen.

Grapes
DO: store in their original ventilated plastic bag, remove bruised or damaged fruit, and wrap with paper towel to absorb excess moisture that promotes mold growth.
DON'T: wash until right before eating; doing so in advance encourages mold development.

Leafy Greens
DO: pat them dry before storing, as excess moisture contributes to decay. Wrap in paper towels, place in a plastic bag, and store in the crisper.
DON'T: keep them in close proximity to ethylene-producing fruits like tomatoes.

Berries
DO: store in their original clamshell containers, which increase ventilation. Remove bruised or moldy berries from the batch; they’ll speed up decay among the rest.
DON'T: wash berries prior to storage for the same reason as grapes

Apples
DO: store in plastic bags in the refrigerator crisper to lock in moisture. Puréed apples mixed with sugar keep well in the freezer, as do slices of apple that have been sprinkled with lemon juice to prevent browning.
DON'T: store near vegetables, which can be damaged easily by the ethylene the apples produce.

Potatoes
DO: keep baking potatoes like Yukon Golds or Russets in a cool, dark place and store smaller varieties like red potatoes in the fridge.
DON'T: store baking potatoes near direct sunlight, which stimulates the growth of a toxin that can be dangerous in large amounts. Also keep smaller-size potatoes away from apples and pears, which will take on the tuber’s earthy flavor.

Asparagus
DO: wrap a paper towel around the spears and place the entire bunch in a perforated plastic bag in your crisper to prevent dehydration.
DON'T: submerge these green sprigs in water; this method actually increases bacteria growth, hastening decay.

Carrots
DO: remove leafy tops to prolong storage. Peeled baby carrots can go anywhere in the fridge, but larger carrots with skins are much more sensitive to ethylene.
DON'T: store large carrots next to fruit--after a week or two they’ll become bitter and nearly inedible due to the ethylene from the fruits.

Continuous Chest Compression CPR

Sarver Heart Center’s newest video makes it easy to learn Continuous Chest Compression CPR. Every three days, more Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest than the number who died in the 9-11 attacks. You can lessen this recurring loss by learning this hands-only CPR method that doubles a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. Watch physician researchers Gordon A. Ewy, MD, and Karl Kern, MD, demonstrate the easy, life-saving method that they developed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Wrinkled Fingers and Toes - Why?

We swim, we bathe, and there they are – those wrinkled, pruney fingers and toes. Why do they do this? They seem to get more wrinkled the longer they are wet! According to Mark A. Changizi, a neuroscientist, he suggests this is a great example of our human design.

In Changizi’s studies, he asks why when plunged into water, the skin doesn’t absorb the water and become filled and plump but instead gets pruney and wrinkled? He found the nervous system is involved. Oddly, fingers and toes do not prune up in people with severed nerves. In his research it is clear to him that this was not just a physical reaction, it was designed.

Furthermore, it's been discovered submersion isn't necessarily the only way to make these orbs of wrinkles.  Walking in wet grass will also produce this effect on your feet. It is the body’s way of providing channels that help water drain away and provide some resistance against slipperiness.

He explains it with this analogy: When dry, our fingers and toes are smooth like racing tires. When they get wet, they transform into all weather tires that can provide traction.

Wow! We ARE fearfully and wonderfully made!
