Good Posture is Important For Proper Back Support

Remember the days of your mother reminding you to "stand up straight"?  Well, she was onto something!

Posture and back pain have long been associated with one another as interlocking components, in relation to the health of our spine and our back. But many people really have no idea how critical posture is in correlation to our back support. Correct posture is a simple, but effective way to maintain proper back health and maintain healthy spine support. Good posture and back support are integral components critical to reducing the incidences and levels of back pain and neck pain.

Not maintaining good posture and adequate back support can put serious strain on the muscles and even more stress on the spine. Over time, the stress from poor posture can change the anatomical characteristics of the spine, leading to possibly serious medical problems, including constricted blood vessels, nerves, and problems with muscles, bones and joints. Having poor posture can also contribute to neck pain, as well as headaches, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. Having poor posture is not a laughing matter, and it could be contributing to your back pain more than you realize.

Correct posture involves keeping each part of the body in alignment with the surrounding areas. This means keeping all parts balanced and supported. If you have correct posture you should be able to draw an imaginary straight line from the earlobe, through the shoulder, hip, knee, and right down to the middle of the ankle. When moving from one position to another, the most ideal situation for your back is to move smoothly and with fluidity. After a concentrated effort, these movements will become more automatic and require little or no effort to maintain.

Examples of bad posture are slouching with shoulders hunched forward, swayback syndrome, which is an inward curve in the spine, due to bad posture. Carrying something that is too heavy on one side of the body can cause bad posture. If people hold the phone between their neck and shoulder for too long, it can cause bad posture. Even wearing high-heeled shoes or clothes that are too tight, can cause poor posture.

To quickly identify bad posture you need to examine your own individual posture throughout the day, such as sitting on the couch, standing in line, etc. At regular times throughout the day take notice of your posture and back support to see if you are following the correct guidelines of good posture. Bad posture can cause tense muscles, which can put the whole body out of alignment. By having better posture you will sustain proper back health, feel better, look better, and maintain a better sense of balance in your body.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action. Whatever the mind expects, it finds.
Not everyone accepts or believes in positive thinking. Some consider the subject as just nonsense, and others scoff at people who believe and accept it. Among the people who accept it, not many know how to use it effectively to get results. Yet, it seems that many are becoming attracted to this subject, as evidenced by the many books, lectures and courses about it. This is a subject that is gaining popularity.
It is quite common to hear people say: "Think positive!", to someone who feels down and worried. Most people do not take these words seriously, as they do not know what they really mean, or do not consider them as useful and effective. How many people do you know, who stop to think what the power of positive thinking means?

Positive and negative thinking are both contagious
All of us affect, in one way or another, the people we meet. This happens instinctively and on a subconscious level, through thoughts and feelings transference, and through body language. People sense our aura and are affected by our thoughts, and vice versa. Is it any wonder that we want to be around positive people and avoid negative ones? People are more disposed to help us if we are positive, and they dislike and avoid anyone broadcasting negativity.
Negative thoughts, words and attitude bring up negative and unhappy moods and actions. When the mind is negative, poisons are released into the blood, which cause more unhappiness and negativity. This is the way to failure, frustration and disappointment.

Practical Instructions
In order to turn the mind toward the positive, inner work and training are required. Attitude and thoughts do not change overnight.
Read about this subject, think about its benefits and persuade yourself to try it. The power of thoughts is a mighty power that is always shaping our life. This shaping is usually done subconsciously, but it is possible to make the process a conscious one. Even if the idea seems strange give it a try, as you have nothing to lose, but only to gain. Ignore what others might say or think about you, if they discover that you are changing the way you think.
Always visualize only favorable and beneficial situations. Use positive words in your inner dialogues or when talking with others. Smile a little more, as this helps to think positively. Disregard any feelings of laziness or a desire to quit. If you persevere, you will transform the way your mind thinks.
Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to be aware of it and endeavor to replace it with a constructive one. The negative thought will try again to enter your mind, and then you have to replace it again with a positive one. It is as if there are two pictures in front of you, and you choose to look at one of them and disregard the other. Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think positively and ignore negative thoughts.
In case you feel any inner resistance when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up, but keep looking only at the beneficial, good and happy thoughts in your mind.
It does not matter what your circumstances are at the present moment. Think positively, expect only favorable results and situations, and circumstances will change accordingly. It may take some time for the changes to take place, but eventually they do.

Importance Of The Sense Of Touch

The sense of touch is most important of our five senses. We can't live without it. It is a basic human need. This isn't surprising when we think about how infants need loving touch to be healthy and develop properly. Additionally, touch can heal. Many conditions can be alleviated by the healing touch of another human being: headaches, stress, anxiety, difficulty relaxing, tiredness, chronic pain, strained or injured muscles. Healing touches release the body's natural capacity to heal. It's holistic; starting with the skin, it "touches" the mind and spirit as well as the body.

Simple affection is the most basic form of healing touch. Hugs, caresses, hand holding, cuddling, kissing and putting an arm around another express love and nurturing. A pat on the back communicates support and praise. And doesn't it feel so good???

Therapeutic Massage
This can bring deep relaxation to the body and reduce stress and mental and physical fatigue. It can help circulation and healing of tissues and bones. Headaches, back pain, and the pain of tight or overworked muscles can respond to massage. It can also improve posture, flexibility and give an overall sense of well-being.   ~ Joel Schorn

Quote:
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." ~ Leo F. Buscaglia

Helpful Hint:
It is possible to relieve or fend off a headache by gently massaging your ears, which releases tension from head muscles.

A Bit of Humor - You Might be a Massage Therapist if...
■Your uncle throws his back out. And you throw it back in.
■You're the strongest muscle relaxer available without a prescription.
■You never rub people "the wrong way."
■You relax more shoulders before 6 a.m. than most people do their entire lives.

Guidelines to Food Storage

It makes economic sense to capitalize on sales and stock up on groceries when prices are low. You need to understand proper food storage techniques and the longevity of common grocery items.

Breads and Pastries

Freshly baked breads, at room temperature, last about three to five days. In the freezer, breads last up to three months when wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Pastries and doughnuts are best eaten within three days, but can be frozen as long as bread. Baked cookies last in the freezer for six to 12 months when stored in an airtight container.

Pantry Items

Common pantry items such as baking soda, baking powder, flour, dried herbs and dried spices generally have a long shelf life when stored in dry, covered conditions. Unopened baking soda can last about two years while unopened baking powder can last about 18 months. Store flour for six to eight months in an airtight container. For dried herbs and spices, use within six months.

Dairy

Most common dairy items should be stored in the refrigerator. Butter lasts from one to three months in the fridge and can be stored in the freezer for up to nine months.  The same guidelines apply to hard cheeses. Consume milk, yogurt and cottage cheese within one week.

Meat, Poultry and Fish

Uncooked red meats can be frozen for up to four months on average. Frozen, uncooked chicken and turkey lasts for about one year. Most freshly bought fish can be frozen for up to six months. Consume fresh, uncooked meat, poultry and fish within two days when stored in the fridge

Looking For A Manufactured Home Retirement Community?

Manufactured Home Communities are popular because they offer the lifestyle and community many are looking for in their retirement living. Manufactured homes are “affordable”. Cost and upkeep is low compared to the homes of ones “child rearing years” and “empty nest years”. A well maintained community has the “appearance” retirees find desirable. Everyone in the community has the same rules – and each must keep their homes and yards in good condition. There is a certain feel of “community” and “security” a manufactured home community provides. This is a close knit neighborhood. Because neighbors share social centers that accommodate activities, it’s easy to stay active, know your neighbors and be concerned for each other. Often it is found that people watch out for each other’s homes and friends. This is community spirit at it’s best!

Not sure yet? Stop by any of our manufactured home communities and see for yourself! To find the location of Newby Management's Florida communities, go to http://www.newbyrealty.com/.

I've Learned... by Andy Rooney

Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes Correspondent, CBS, is known to millions for his wry, humorous and sometimes controversial essays that have been the signature end piece of 60 Minutes for decades. Rooney has always considered himself a writer who appears on television. He published articles in major magazines, and is the author of 13 books.

I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.
I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.
I've learned.... That just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.
I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.
I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.
I've learned.... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.
I've learned.... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
I've learned.... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.
I've learned.... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
I've learned.... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
I've learned.... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.
I've learned.... That money doesn't buy class.
I've learned.... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
I've learned... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
I've learned.... That the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?
I've learned... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.
I've learned.... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
I've learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.
I've learned.... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
I've learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
I've learned.... That there's nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling their breath on your cheeks.
I've learned.... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
I've learned.... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.
I've learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
I've learned.... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I've learned.... That I wish I could have told my Dad that I love him one more time before he passed away.
I've learned.... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
I've learned.... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
I've learned.... That I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.
I've learned.... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.
I've learned.... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.
I've learned ... That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.
I've learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Where Did The Piggy Bank Come From?

While the exact origin is a little uncertain, historians speculate that the concept of a piggy bank started in England during the Middle Ages, probably in the mid-1500s.

At this point in history, metal was still seldom used and very expensive. So expensive, in fact, that common people did not own any metal cooking pots or utensils. Instead, dishes, jars and cookware were made from an affordable and easily available orange clay that was called "pygg."

Families often kept any spare household coins in one of their clay pygg jars, and these containers became commonly known in England as a pygg jar and later a pygg bank.

Several centuries later -- probably around the eighteenth century -- the name had evolved into piggy bank. Around this same time, a handful of potters began making clay banks in the shape and likeness of the animal namesake, and the first piggy banks were born.

Children and adults were captivated by these new piggy banks and the trend quickly spread throughout England. These early models were usually ceramic and had no hole in the bottom. Sadly, in order to retrieve the money, the pig had to be broken open! As the years went by, someone thought to add a method of emptying the container so the piggy was spared for another round of saving.

The piggy bank eventually became popular throughout England as a whimsical "money-saving" device for young children. The piggy bank isn't associated with any holiday and it has no religious ties and it is found in many cultures from North and South America to Europe, Asia and parts of Africa.

Creating a Budget

Creating a budget may not sound like the most exciting thing in the world to do, but it is vital in keeping your financial house in order. Before you begin to create your budget it is important to realize that in order to be successful you have to provide as much detailed information as possible. Ultimately, the end result will be able to show where your money is coming from, how much is there and where it is all going.

Here's How:
1.Gather every financial statement you can. This includes bank statements, investment accounts, recent utility bills and any information regarding a source of income or expense. The key for this process is to create a monthly average so the more information you can dig up the better.
2.Record all of your sources of income. If you are self-employed or have any outside sources of income be sure to record these as well. If your income is in the form of a regular paycheck where taxes are automatically deducted then using the net income, or take home pay, amount is fine. Record this total income as a monthly amount.
3.Create a list of monthly expenses. Write down a list of all the expected expenses you plan on incurring over the course of a month. This includes a mortgage payment, car payments, auto insurance, groceries, utilities, entertainment, dry cleaning, auto insurance, retirement or college savings and essentially everything you spend money on.
4.Break expenses into two categories: fixed and variable. Fixed expenses are those that stay relatively the same each month and are required parts of your way of living. They included expenses such as your mortgage or rent, car payments, cable and/or internet service, trash pickup, credit card payments and so on. These expenses for the most part are essential yet not likely to change in the budget.
Variable expenses are the type that will change from month to month and include items such as groceries, gasoline, entertainment, eating out and gifts to name a few. This category will be important when making adjustments.
5.Total your monthly income and monthly expenses. If your end result shows more income than expenses you are off to a good start. This means you can prioritize this excess to areas of your budget such as retirement savings or paying more on credit cards to eliminate that debt faster. If you are showing a higher expense column than income it means some changes will have to be made.
6.Make adjustments to expenses. If you have accurately identified and listed all of your expenses the ultimate goal would be to have your income and expense columns to be equal. This means all of your income is accounted for and budgeted for a specific expense.
If you are in a situation where expenses are higher than income you should look at your variable expenses to find areas to cut. Since these expenses are typically essential it should be easy to shave a few dollars in a few areas to bring you closer to your income.
7.Review your budget monthly. It is important to review your budget on a regular basis to make sure you are staying on track. After the first month take a minute to sit down and compare the actual expenses versus what you had created in the budget. This will show you where you did well and where you may need to improve.

Nightmares

Nightmares happen for a various reasons. There is really no way to pinpoint exactly what causes nightmares in different people because everyone is different. However most who have been reported to have nightmares all have one thing in common, something that is troubling them in their day to day life that they cannot get settled so they have dreams about it in the form of nightmares.

It is known that nightmares occur during the period of sleep known as REM sleep. REM sleep is simply Rapid Eye Movement sleep periods. Most adults spend close to 25% of their sleeping time in REM sleep which equals about an hour and a half to two hours for a normal person. This is what causes nightmares to occur in the normal morning hours. Rarely will a person report having a nightmare during a short nap because they don’t enter the REM sleep period.

What causes nightmares for some people could be the medication they are taking or the illness they suffer from, which goes back to something that may be troubling them for which they have no control over.

It’s important to remember that what causes nightmares could be the simplest of things that your brain just won’t let go of. Nightmares also can impact the whole day after you have one with mood swings and easy irritability due to the restless night you spent while experiencing a nightmare.

Nightmares are no more than a bad dream, they are just more troubling for you when you awake. The best way to avoid having these nightmares is to have calm serene thoughts before you go to sleep for the night. Try and resolve things in your daily life that would cause you to have nightmares even if the nightmare has nothing to do with what is troubling you, it could be coming out in your dreams as a horrible thing that happens to you. Eliminating the problems in your life will help you to stop having nightmares.

Self Control Tips

Many of us struggle with that vexing challenge—whether it's sticking to a new diet or resisting a shopping spree. Why is our self-control so strong on some days and so weak on others? Contrary to popular belief, willpower is not dependent on psychological strength alone. Physiological factors, such as blood sugar, brain chemistry, and hormones, also influence—and can undermine—our powers of self-restraint. The good news: "Once you understand the forces that weaken your self-control, you can do a lot to strengthen it," says Kathleen D. Vohs, PhD, associate professor of consumer psychology at the Carlson School of Management in Minneapolis.

Here's how to reinforce your willpower so it's ready when you need it.

Budget your resolve:  Each of us has a limited supply of self-control, which means if you try to exert it in too many areas at once, you'll rapidly deplete your reserve. A study from Case Western Reserve University illustrates the point. Researchers placed freshly baked chocolate chip cookies before two groups of participants, instructing one group to eat two or three and the other to eat radishes (while watching the others partake). Then everyone was asked to try to solve an impossible puzzle. Participants who had to resist the treats gave up on the problem twice as fast as those who were allowed to indulge. "Willpower is like gas in your car," says Vohs. "When you resist something tempting, you use some up. The more you resist, the emptier your tank gets, until you run out of gas."
Tip: Concentrate your willpower where you need it most. Don't try to cut down on your computer chat time and lose weight at the same time. If you've spent the whole day fighting the urge to tell off a difficult colleague, don't go shopping after work. Vohs found that people were willing to purchase more when their willpower had been drained by a previous unrelated exercise in self-control.

Keep blood sugar steady:  Even a small blood-sugar dip, which occurs after you've skipped a meal, can impair the areas that oversee planning and self-restraint. Ironically, research shows that exerting your willpower decreases glucose even more. So if you skip lunch and spend the afternoon fighting the desire to dip into a coworker's candy jar, you could set yourself up for an evening binge.
Tip: Eat small meals that contain both complex carbohydrates and protein throughout the day (including breakfast). Keep protein-packed energy bars—with at least 5 g of protein—in your bag so you never have to skip a meal. By stabilizing blood sugar, you'll be better able to resist overeating—and other impulsive activities—later.

Don't overdiet:  Eating too little not only depletes glucose, it also curtails the production of leptin, a hormone made by fat cells that helps regulate appetite. "Within a few days of starting to diet, your leptin levels can drop by half," explains Neal Barnard, MD, author of Breaking the Food Seduction. "Plummeting levels can increase appetite and bring on a binge."
Tip: Follow "the rule of 10": Multiply your target weight by 10, and never eat fewer calories than that daily total. And be sure to exercise 30 to 40 minutes each day. (A walk is fine.) Daily activity also maintains healthy levels of leptin, research shows.

Don't skimp on sleep:  Research shows that getting less than 6 hours of snooze time decreases decision-making abilities and leads to what Vohs calls "failures of self-control" as the day wears on. One mechanism in play: ghrelin, a hormone that triggers hunger. One study of healthy adults found that after they got 4 hours of sleep just 2 nights in a row, their levels of ghrelin increased by 28% and their appetites by a whopping 23%, especially for salty snacks and sweets.
Tip: Sleep between 7 and 8 hours each night. To get that amount, keep your room dark, quiet, and cool and develop a presleep ritual, such as a 10-minute meditation, to banish the day's stresses.

What Causes Hiccups

Trying to get rid of the hiccups can be frustrating We have all experienced an episode of the hiccups, but have you ever stopped to ask yourself what causes hiccups to occur? Some of the theories about what causes hiccups are discussed below in addition to tips on what you can do to avoid them and how to get rid of them if you can't.

What are hiccups?
Hiccups are caused by a sudden involuntary spasm, or contraction of the dome shaped muscular partition separating the chest and the abdominal cavity. This partition, called the diaphragm, plays an important role in breathing. Normally, the diaphragm expands and deflates as it draws air into the lungs and then upon relaxation forces it out. A spasm of the diaphragm causes the abrupt inhalation of air. As it rushes through the airway towards the lungs, the opening into the glottis, or the windpipe as it's commonly referred to, closes suddenly halting the airflow. This causes the vocal chords to close quickly, producing the distinguishing hic sound we all know so well.

So why do we get hiccups?
Many factors can contribute to a case of the hiccups. Irritation to the nerves that control normal contractions of the diaphragm can occur upon the consumption of hot or spicy foods or by drinking carbonated liquids. This irritation can cause hiccups. Eating a large meal or eating too quickly can also cause hiccups by distending the stomach. The stomach is located directly under the diaphragm and it is believed by some that the hiccuping is a reflex to protect us from choking. Changing the temperature in the stomach by drinking a cold and then a hot beverage has also been known to activate the hiccups. Others aggressors include sudden excitement or stress, nervousness, heartburn, smoking, being under general anesthesia or having pneumonia. One of the biggest triggers for hiccups is alcohol. This is why intoxicated people often have the hiccups. Occasionally, a case of the hiccups can be related to a more serious underlying condition such as diabetes or kidney failure. If the hiccups last longer than twenty-four hours or if you have severe abdominal pain during an episode, consult your physician.

Hiccup cures
Although most cases of the hiccups will be brief and harmless, sometimes they can be more serious and in fact, the longest episode on record is sixty-five years. Although rare, long-term hiccups, called intractable hiccups, do occur and can last for weeks or even months. For most cases however, simple measures can be taken to encourage the episode to stop. Common cures include breath holding, which increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood, an event that is thought to help stop hiccups. Other methods such as drinking water or holding one's tongue can also help. Both of these stimulate the vagus nerve, the nerve that runs from the brain to the stomach, which helps reduce hiccups. Breathing into a paper bag, being startled and placing sugar under your tongue are also well-known remedies.

If the above suggestions do not work and the hiccups continue, consulting your doctor is necessary. She may have some ideas about what causes hiccups in your unique situation. There are medications that can be helpful; the most commonly used drug is Chlorpromazine, better known as Thorazine. Physicians can also place a plastic or rubber suction tube through the nostril into the nose in order to stimulate the pharynx with a back and forth movement. In addition, for severe hiccup cases an operation can be done to cut or paralyze the phrenic nerve. The phrenic nerve facilitates contraction of the diaphragm and paralyzing it will end intractable hiccups.

Knowing what causes hiccups will help you prevent them and give you insight about what to do when they occur. For most, an episode of the hiccups is annoying but not serious and a drink of water and a deep breath will be enough to cure what ails you.

The Burning Question: Is It Safe to Use Antibacterial Soap?

Two experts, two slightly different views of the question:

Nancy Snyderman, MD. Chief medical editor for NBC News and author of Medical Myths that Can Kill You:

     Yes, if used in moderation.

There are times when it's crucial—say, when there's a risk of transferring bacteria from patient to patient, such as if you're a health-care worker, visiting the hospital, or at the doctor's office. It's also good to keep it in the kitchen for use after handling raw meat.
Its invention was a health breakthrough. The introduction of antibacterial soap was a wonderful step forward in public hygiene, especially in making hospitals and surgical suites safer, thanks to its ability to destroy health-endangering microbes.
It helps you keep clean, within reason. We've gone a little cuckoo with the idea that everything—from countertops to every inch of our body—has to be sterile. But if people feel safer using it to wash their hands, that's fine.

Michael F. Roizen, MD. Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic and co-author of YOU: The Owner's Manual:

     No, use regular soap instead.

Plain soap and water work just fine. Regular soap kills some bacteria by destroying their cell walls, and the rest are washed away. Removing germs is enough—you don't have to destroy them.
It could create drug-resistant bacteria. Most antibacterial soaps contain triclosan, an antibiotic. When antibiotics are used often and unnecessarily, bacteria can become resistant to them, making it harder for us to fight diseases.
It may mess with your hormones. We don't yet know how triclosan affects us for sure; its safety is under Food and Drug Administration review. But animal studies suggest it may disrupt the endocrine system—possibly causing problems with development and reproduction.

The Takeaway:
Opt for regular soap and water, unless you’re at a hospital or doctor's office, where it's best to use antibacterial soap. But if you're out and about and antibacterial soap is the only kind around, it's fine to wash with it—and it's worth keeping in the kitchen to use after handling raw meat.

Know Your Cholesterol Levels

While there are no apparent high cholesterol signs and symptoms, too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to plaque buildup on artery walls. This buildup, known as atherosclerosis, can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Without any indications to watch for, the only way to know if your cholesterol is too high is to be tested regularly.

Too much cholesterol in the blood does not cause noticeable high cholesterol signs and symptoms, so many people are unaware that their level is too high. High cholesterol increases your risk of developing certain medical conditions, including heart disease or having a heart attack.

High Cholesterol Signs and Symptoms: Plaque Buildup

High cholesterol levels in the blood do not cause problems over a short time. It usually takes many years for high levels to cause problems.

If your cholesterol level is too high, low density lipoproteins (LDLs) will leave extra cholesterol in the blood. If the high density lipoproteins (HDLs) cannot pick up all of this cholesterol, it will build up on your artery walls, along with other fats and debris. This buildup is known as plaque.

Over time, plaque can narrow the blood vessels; sometimes, this buildup may even block your blood vessels completely. Plaque buildup on your blood vessel walls is called atherosclerosis.

It is not known why such a buildup occurs, but a narrowed or blocked blood vessel can prevent blood from getting to where it needs to go. Without blood, tissues will die.

If the blocked vessel is in your brain, it can cause a stroke. Blockages can also occur in the blood vessels (called the coronary arteries) that carry blood to the heart muscle. This blockage process is called coronary heart disease, and it can result in a heart attack.

Atherosclerosis can affect all of your organ systems; however, the organ most seriously affected by both high cholesterol and atherosclerosis is the heart.

According to the findings of recent studies, the progress of atherosclerosis may be stopped by lowering cholesterol. In some cases, it may even be reversed.

Even though a person may not experience signs and symptoms of high cholesterol, the effects can be life-threatening. Thus, it is important to get your cholesterol tested so that you know your cholesterol numbers. Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens the risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of a heart attack or dying of heart disease, even if you already have it.

Reducing cholesterol is important for everyone -- younger, middle age, and older adults; women and men; and people with or without heart disease.
