As we celebrate Veterans Day this year, let us once again remember the millions in the military who have given their dedication, support, respect and even their lives to and for our country. What they have willfully done in the name of the love for their country has given us our freedom today.
This isn't just another holiday to be regarded as one which allows us to be off school, work or look for sales in the stores. Its history is one that deserves our respect, honor and reverence.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to ALL American veterans of all wars.
Ever wonder why such groups as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars offer poppies for a donation at this time and Memorial Day? Poppies have long been associated with World War I memorials through the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. In the World War I battlefields of Belgium, poppies grew wild amid the ravaged landscape. Our dead were buried in these poppy fields. The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to be covered, thus allowing them to grow and to forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed during that and future wars. The poppies offered by veterans are made by our veterans and are sold to raise money for their support. They are to be worn as a sign of remembrance.
Next time you see a veteran outside the grocery store offering you a poppy, take a moment to stop and reflect on what their life's story may include ... what their loved ones endured while they served ... where their travels took them ... what conditions they experienced ... what their needs may be now.
A heartfelt, THANK YOU to the men and women in our military! May you be honored, appreciated, and prayed for every day of the year.
God Bless Each of You!
