~ On September 3, 1838, a slave named Frederick Douglass escaped to freedom. He dressed as a sailor and boarded a train in Baltimore, Maryland. He rode to Wilmington, Delaware where he caught a steamboat to the free city of Philadelphia and then went on to New York City.

~ Uncle Sam's image was first used on this day in 1813.

~ Today is Newspaper Carrier Day in the US. The first newsboy, 10 year old Barney Flaherty, was hired on September 4, 1833.

~ Roger Maris' birthday (1934)  American Major League Baseball right fielder. During the 1961 season, Maris hit 61 home runs for the New York Yankees, breaking Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs (set in 1927), a record that stood for 37 years.
