Beginning an Exercise Routine - Baby Steps

You know it’s the healthy thing to do. You realize even a little bit is better than nothing. So, you decide to give it a go! GOOD FOR YOU!

Now questions arise:  Where do you begin? What kind of exercise?  How often?  How long?  Will you keep it up?

As always, check with your health advisor before you begin. Once you are given the ok, you're ready for these encouraging hints to help you get going:

Start out slow – To make sure injury isn’t in the equation, set a goal that is not too difficult. Remember: Don’t expect too much too fast. This can result in losing the desire to continue with your decision to get moving.

Set a time each day for your new activity – Just like you take a shower, brush your teeth or comb your hair, make time for your exercising. This will help it become more of your daily routine.

Make it enjoyable – Choose an activity you know will keep your interest and you can have fun with. Play music, listen to an audio book or interact with a friend that’s with you. This not only helps the time go by, but it does provide encouragement and a realization of knowing it really isn’t “so bad”!

Warm up – Take a moment to do some warm ups. Stretches and even some jumping jacks will get the muscles warmed up.

Ten minutes to start with - Start out with a commitment of spending about ten minutes a day moving your body. This doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. Walk, swim, bicycle or even dance! Don’t try to break any record or win the race, just get used to moving! Pain = Stop!

Drink water – Hydration is very important! If you are exercising outdoors, it is even more of a must to keep hydrated.

Eat – It’s good to eat before exercising. Don’t hit the pavement without eating breakfast. Fuel your body so it has energy to burn!

Add a little more each week – As you progress over a week, add a little more time to your exercise experience. You will be amazed how small increments add up and you soon are going much further than you ever thought you could!

As you build your confidence, energy and endurance, enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction it brings! You are on your way to a healthier you!

Congratulations our your successful new endeavor!!
