The extensive heat sweeping our nation is of concern for young and old alike. Dehydration and heat related illnesses are especially dangerous to infants, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Remember, our beloved pets need protection also. They are just as susceptible to heat related problems and sickness.~ Try to stay indoors away from the sun and heat sources.
~ Drink plenty of water and drinks that provide electrolytes such as sports drinks.
~ If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, go to places that do have it. Movie theaters, stores, library, malls, or other public places that are air conditioned will provide great relief from the heat.
~ Avoid alcohol and caffeine. These promote dehydration.
~ In your home, use fans to circulate the air, even if you do have air conditioning.
~ Shower or bathe with cool water frequently.
~ Mist your body with a fan that attaches to a water bottle. Fill the bottle with ice water. Or fill a small spray bottle with ice water to do the same.
~ Try not to use your oven. Prepare cold salads, fruits and other dishes that are a cool fare.
~ Cool your body by wearing a hat dampened with ice water.
~ Store bottled water in the freezer and have it with you when you go outside.
~ Put your lotion bottles in the refrigerator so they are cooling when you apply the lotion.
~ Wear loose fitting clothing.
~ Cotton fabrics are cooler than polyester for your clothes.
~ When outside, take precaution of the sun’s rays and wear sunscreen. Being hot and sun burned is a dangerous combination.
