It is known that nightmares occur during the period of sleep known as REM sleep. REM sleep is simply Rapid Eye Movement sleep periods. Most adults spend close to 25% of their sleeping time in REM sleep which equals about an hour and a half to two hours for a normal person. This is what causes nightmares to occur in the normal morning hours. Rarely will a person report having a nightmare during a short nap because they don’t enter the REM sleep period.
What causes nightmares for some people could be the medication they are taking or the illness they suffer from, which goes back to something that may be troubling them for which they have no control over.
It’s important to remember that what causes nightmares could be the simplest of things that your brain just won’t let go of. Nightmares also can impact the whole day after you have one with mood swings and easy irritability due to the restless night you spent while experiencing a nightmare.
Nightmares are no more than a bad dream, they are just more troubling for you when you awake. The best way to avoid having these nightmares is to have calm serene thoughts before you go to sleep for the night. Try and resolve things in your daily life that would cause you to have nightmares even if the nightmare has nothing to do with what is troubling you, it could be coming out in your dreams as a horrible thing that happens to you. Eliminating the problems in your life will help you to stop having nightmares.
