Guidelines to Food Storage

It makes economic sense to capitalize on sales and stock up on groceries when prices are low. You need to understand proper food storage techniques and the longevity of common grocery items.

Breads and Pastries

Freshly baked breads, at room temperature, last about three to five days. In the freezer, breads last up to three months when wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Pastries and doughnuts are best eaten within three days, but can be frozen as long as bread. Baked cookies last in the freezer for six to 12 months when stored in an airtight container.

Pantry Items

Common pantry items such as baking soda, baking powder, flour, dried herbs and dried spices generally have a long shelf life when stored in dry, covered conditions. Unopened baking soda can last about two years while unopened baking powder can last about 18 months. Store flour for six to eight months in an airtight container. For dried herbs and spices, use within six months.

Dairy

Most common dairy items should be stored in the refrigerator. Butter lasts from one to three months in the fridge and can be stored in the freezer for up to nine months.  The same guidelines apply to hard cheeses. Consume milk, yogurt and cottage cheese within one week.

Meat, Poultry and Fish

Uncooked red meats can be frozen for up to four months on average. Frozen, uncooked chicken and turkey lasts for about one year. Most freshly bought fish can be frozen for up to six months. Consume fresh, uncooked meat, poultry and fish within two days when stored in the fridge
