Being hospitalized can be a very intimidating experience. Patients find themselves thrown into a foreign environment and often feel that they have very little or no control over what is happening to them.
Dealing with an illness is stressful for patients as well as family members. This stress is magnified by the busy and seemingly impersonal environment of the hospital. In this situation, patients often feel intimidated about voicing their concerns related to their care.
Patients have many rights and protections guaranteed under State and Federal law. Don’t feel that you must “do as you are told”. The following are some of the rights that every patient should be aware of:
~ All patients have an absolute right to an understandable explanation of their complete medical condition, recommended treatment, expected results, risks and reasonable medical alternatives. Should the treating physician conclude that this information would be detrimental to the patient's condition at the time, a family member/next of kin must be provided with the necessary information.
~ No patient’s question is a silly question. It is the doctor's obligation to help you fully understand all pertinent information and to make your own informed decisions based on this knowledge. You have the right to insist on clear explanations of all treatment, including any tests, procedures and medications. Patients have the right to play an active role in developing their plan of care. You should not hesitate to ask any and all healthcare providers what they are doing and/or giving and why.
~ If you find any healthcare discussion difficult to understand, do not be embarrassed to say so and ask to have it explained in a simpler way. It’s your body and you have a right to fully understand what is going on.
~ You have the right to be treated with respect and to have your privacy protected. The hospital staff must be sensitive to any cultural, racial, linguistic, religious, age or gender differences and must address any specific needs you may have.
~ You have the right to have your information treated confidentially. Information in your medical record may not be released without your approval, unless required by law. You have the right to inspect your medical record within ten days of your request to do so.
Never hesitate to ask what they are doing — and why!

Importance of Breakfast
Breakfast = "Break" the "Fast"
Over the night, we go without food for 8 to 12 hours. Our blood sugar levels drop during this "fast". Eating breakfast not only aids in weight management, it fuels the body to help provide energy, better concentration and problem-solving ability throughout the day, according to the food and nutrition experts at the American Dietetic Association. If you are watching your weight, eat breakfast. It helps keep the metabolism going. Cranky and irritable in the morning? Eat breakfast, it will help. (...and those around you will be glad you did!)
Any menu works for breakfast. The typical choices of eggs, toast, juice, cereal, milk, coffee, tea, fruit, granola, yogurt - are all ideal choices. The untraditional choices of things like lunch or dinner selections or leftovers also work. Just eat!
IHOP French Toast - an "exciting" breakfast choice!
2 eggs 1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 c milk 3 tsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla 6 slices thick French bread
3 T all-purpose flour 1 T. powered sugar
Beat the eggs in a large shallow bowl. Add the milk, vanilla, flour and salt to the eggs. Beat the mixture with an electric mixer. Be sure all the flour is well combined. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. When the surface is hot, add about a tsp. of butter. Dip the bread, a slice at a time, into the batter, being sure to coat each side well. Drop the bread in the hot pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side or until the surface is golden brown. Repeat with the remaining pieces of bread. Cut each piece of toast in half diagonally. Arrange six halves of the toast on two plates by neatly overlapping the slices. Sprinkle about 1/2 tsp. of powdered sugar over the tops of the toast slices. Serve with butter and syrup on the side. ~ From Winterset RV Resort's April newsletter - from Top Secret Restaurant Recipes by Todd Wilbur.

Home Cures that Really Work!
Home Cures Worth Trying!
Home cure: Duct tape ~ Use it for: Warts
Yes, this really does work! Covering warts with duct tape eliminates them better than freezing them off, according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In the study, the duct tape eliminated 85% of the warts after 2 months, compared with 60% with the freezing method. To use duct tape safely, clean the area. Then cut a piece of duct tape to a size slightly bigger than the wart. Apply the duct tape to the site and rub into place. Every 3 days, remove the tape and file down dead skin with a pumice stone or nail file. Repeat until the wart disappears. Chemicals in the tape suffocate and kill the wart.
Home cure: Cloves ~ Use it for: Cuts
Sprinkle powdered cloves on a cut to keep it from becoming infected, says Duke. Clove oil is rich in eugenol, a chemical that’s both antiseptic and pain-killing.
Home cure: Vodka ~ Use it for: Foot odor
If your feet smell less than swell, wipe them down with a vodka-soaked washcloth to get rid of the stench. It’s the same principle as rubbing alcohol (which works equally well if you’d rather drink your Grey Goose). Vodka contains alcohol, which is antiseptic and drying, so it destroys odor-causing fungus and bacteria and dries out the moisture that lets these organisms grow.
Home cure: Yogurt ~ Use it for: Bad breath
Preliminary research shows that the live bacteria in yogurt can suppress levels of bad breath–causing bacteria. “Good” bugs in yogurt may crowd out the “bad” stink-causing bacteria or create an unhealthy environment for it, says John C. Moon, DDS, a cosmetic and general dentist in Half Moon Bay, CA.
Home cure: Listerine ~ Use it for: Blisters
The classic breath freshener—and powerful antiseptic—can also do a number on blisters. Moisten a cotton ball with Listerine and dab it on your blister 3 times a day until the area dries out and no longer hurts, says Janet Maccaro, PhD, CNC, a holistic nutritionist and certified nutrition consultant in Scottsdale, AZ.
Home cure: Lemon balm tea ~ Use it for: Cold sores
Lemon balm is a first-choice herbal treatment for cold sores, which are caused by a type of herpes virus (not the same kind that’s sexually transmitted). It has antiviral properties that work to tame herpes outbreaks, says James Duke, PhD, author of The Green Pharmacy. Prepare lemon balm tea by brewing 2 to 4 tablespoons of the herb per cup of boiling water. Let it cool, then dot with a cotton ball on the cold sore several times a day.
Home cure: Licorice ~ Use it for: Calluses and corns
“Licorice contains estrogen-like substances that soften the hard skin of calluses and corns,” says Georgianna Donadio, PhD, director of the National Institute of Whole Health. Make this homemade licorice paste: Grind up a few licorice sticks, mix them with ½ teaspoon of petroleum jelly, and rub the mixture into the rough areas of your feet.
Home cure: Tennis ball ~ Use it for: Achy feet
For an easy, free mini massage that stretches and soothes your arches, slip off your shoes and roll each foot over a tennis ball, golf ball, or soup can for a minute or two. To cool throbbing feet, roll them over a bottle of frozen water.
Home cure: Olive oil ~ Use it for: Eczema
Soothe flareups by applying olive oil directly to the irritated area, says Christopher Dannaker, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California San Francisco. Packed with antioxidants that can reduce the inflammation associated with eczema, olive oil is the basis for many moisturizers; when used alone, it lacks chemical irritants you may find in store-bought creams. As a bonus, olive oil’s antioxidants help prevent and repair damage that can lead to wrinkles and brown spots. Rub 1 teaspoon per square inch of skin, which creates a seal that prevents skin from drying out. For serious cases, cover oil-slathered skin with plastic wrap overnight to lock moisture in.
Home cure: Sugar ~ Use it for: Hiccups
A teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry can stop hiccups in minutes, says Andre Dubois, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine in the emerging infectious diseases graduate program at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. The sugar is believed to modify the nerve muscles that would otherwise tell the muscles in the diaphragm to contract spasmodically and contribute to hiccups.
Home cure: Olives or lemons ~ Use it for: Motion sickness
Motion sickness causes you to produce excess saliva, which can make you nauseated, some doctors say. Compounds in olives called tannins dry out your mouth and can help soothe the queasies. Pop a couple at the first hint of nausea; sucking on a lemon can also do the trick.
Home cure: Vegetable oil ~ Use it for: Brittle nails
In order to really fix dry nails, you have to address the problem of too-little moisture. In addition to using hand lotion regularly, try this nighttime treatment from dermatologist Dee Anna Glaser, MD: Before you go to bed, apply vegetable oil to your hands, then put on vinyl gloves or wrap your hands in plastic wrap to keep the oil off your bedding. The hand coverings force the oil to penetrate your skin, preventing your hands and nails from getting too dry.
Home cure: Apple ~ Use it for: Whiter teeth
Crunchy fruits and vegetables act as little toothbrushes when you chew them; they have a natural cleansing action that works on tooth enamel to remove stains. In particular, “apples have a gentle malic acid that also helps dissolve stains,” says Jennifer Jabow, DDS, of Park 56 Dental in New York City.
Home cure: Baking soda ~ Use it for: Urinary tract infections
At the first sign of symptoms, drink a solution made with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda mixed in 8 ounces of water. Continue this once a day until you can get a culture done at a doctor’s office and start antibiotics. Baking soda makes the bladder environment more alkaline, which reduces bacteria’s ability to multiply, says Larrian Gillespie, MD, a retired assistant clinical professor of urology and urogynecology in Los Angeles.
Home cure: Papaya ~ Use it for: Smoother skin
This tropical fruit contains papain, a protein-eating enzyme that dissolves the dead cells on your skin’s surface that can make it look dull and rough and leave it prone to breakouts. When used twice a month, this peel leaves skin softer, smoother, and more radiant: Grind 2 tablespoons of washed and peeled papaya in a food processor and add 1 tablespoon of dry oatmeal. Pat this mixture onto clean skin and let it set for 10 minutes before wiping off with a wet washcloth. The enzymes in papaya are gentle, which is why this is an ideal treatment for those with sensitive skin. However, to be safe, do a test spot behind your ear the first time you try it.

Humor - A Conscious Decision
Humor. It's what's good about life! It has a purpose. It is an integral part of us. No matter our age, humor provides balance. A sense of humor keeps us young, well and happy. Our laughter can help balance the difficult sides of life. When we are going off the rails, as we are prone to do, humor can step in and point out what is silly or just plain ridiculous about our situation.
Humor and comedy are good for our physical and emotional health. The power of the mind, or the soul, can influence the body. The body and soul are a unit and influence each other. As stress saps our immune systems, the mental takes a toll on the physical. Laughter also has a physical side and does subtle, positive things to the body. These body changes are measurable and observable. Laughter releases endorphins, chemicals in the brain, which help control pain.
Ever feel "so good" after a "good laugh"? It perks us up, gives us a hop in our step and we feel alive! Well, a shy smile or sly grin can be more telling than the howl.
Try it on for size - one size fits all! ~ Michael J. Farrell
Quotes:
"Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keep friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment." ~ Greenville Kleisser
"Like a welcome summer rain, humor may suddenly cleanse and cool the earth, the air and you." ~ Langston Hughes
A Bit of Humor: A LITTLE BOY AND THE BIG FAMILY BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it closely. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages “Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out.“What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered: “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!” ~ Author Unknown

Selecting the Right Retirement Location
Selecting the Right Retirement Location
What should you take into consideration when selecting the right retirement local? Where do you begin? What is most important?
These questions can be answered many different ways, depending on an individual's priorities. Here are some considerations:
~ Cost of Living - more retirees prefer a lower cost of living - meaning spending less on food, entertainment, housing and entertainment.
~ Lower Tax Locals - seven states do not levy an income tax - Florida being one of them.
~ Health Care Facilities - adequate health care and elder care facilities are important to most. Make sure there are doctors who can treat any condition you may have.
~ Proximity to family - near grandchildren and family members who can help with grocery shopping, transportation, lawn care, etc. These are items that normally would have to be paid for if one can't do them themselves.
~ Job Opportunities - for those who still prefer or need to work in their retirement years, chose a location that has many part time jobs or consulting work.
~ Public Transportation - if you do not have someone to help with transportation, living near public transportation routes is a bonus.
~ Recreation and Culture - did you know college towns offer fabulous, quality entertainment with affordable prices?
~ Housing Needs - downsizing is popular in retirement years. A smaller home is less to heat, cool, keep up, etc.
~ Weather - choose a location that has the weather you most prefer.
~ Amenities - if you plan to travel a lot, you may opt to be near an airport. Other interests or needs may be to pick a location near places of worship, shopping, libraries and senior centers.
All Newby Management communities provide activities and amenities to fit an active or relaxed life style, in locations with many options for shopping, places of worship, entertainment, restaurants, doctors and medical facilities. Florida provides an acceptable climate without income taxes.

Florida's Climate
Florida's climate is best described as subtropical with mild winters and quite warm summers. The state is essentially a long peninsula with no place more than 80 miles from either the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.
Temperatures are greatly influenced by the surrounding water which has a moderating effect on both the high and low temperatures. Generally, the interior of the state tends to warm more rapidly and reach higher temperatures during the day while cooling more rapidly and falling to lower temperatures during the night.
The summer months of June, July, August and even into September are the rainiest months of the year. During this period thunderstorms are common. Many welcome these rain showers as they provide cooling relief during hot afternoons - but, keep them in mind when scheduling your vacation activities! One must be wary since these thunderstorms sometimes become quite severe with very strong winds and intense lightning.
Winter brings dryer weather to Florida and of course the occasional cold front. Northern Florida feels the effects of cold fronts much more than southern Florida. Northern Florida will experience numerous days where the low temperature falls below freezing while this rarely occurs in south Florida. Still, the average low temperature even in the coldest months in north Florida is above 40F in most areas with high temperatures averaging in the 60s. In south Florida the coldest months bring low temperatures that typically average in the 60s with highs reaching well into 70s. Snow is very rare in Florida.
Although snow is rare in Florida, tropical storms and hurricanes are not. Hurricane season is from June 1st through November 30th. These tropical cyclones can bring devastation to Florida. Modern surveillance systems provide plenty of notice of approaching hurricanes, however.
~ Awesome Florida website
Quote:
“Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.” ~ Mark Twain
Helpful Hints:
~ When planning outdoor activities, always have on hand: sunscreen, hat, water. Remember, caffinated beverages are not hydrating.
~ Plan your summer outings in the early a.m. and later afternoon to evening. The sun isn't at it's hottest then.
~ Do not leave anyone or a pet in your car while you run into the store. The heat is intense and can make them ill.
A Bit of Humor:
WHETHER THE WEATHER
Whether the weather be fine
Or whether the weather be not
Whether the weather be cold
Or whether the weather be hot
We'll weather the weather whatever the weather
Whether we like it or not.

Is Your Home Stressing You Out?
Your Home, Your Sanctuary - Stressful??
Your home - whether big, small, or somewhere in between - should be your sanctuary, a place where stress is left at the door and your soul is nurtured. For a more comforting environment, consider implementing the following:
* Bring the outdoors in. Green plants, cut flowers and blooming bulbs, or pieces of wood, rocks and other organic elements can create a feeling of nature indoors.
* Paint a room to suggest a mood. For instance, blue and green promote a relaxed feeling and may be good choices for the bedroom, while warm colors (maroon, coral, burgundy) suggest a cozy environment and may be inviting in a family room.
* Surround your senses with beauty. Artwork, fragrance, smooth textures and calming sounds all provide a pleasant environment in which to relax.
* Set aside a room or area for peace and calm. A place for spiritual reflection and meditation can provide shelter from noise and distraction.
* Clean out clutter. A low-maintenance home is refreshing after a day of hectic meetings, errands and chores. Fewer items can mean less frustration.
* Create an atmosphere of love. Display handmade or meaningful gifts from loved ones and photos of family and friends.
Quote:
"You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyze your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping you toward success - or are they holding you back?" ~ W. Clement Stone

Stay Safe - Helpful Hints from a Burglar's Point of View
VALUABLE information from a burglar's point of view...
- I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.
- I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
- I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
- Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.
- To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation.
- A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom—and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
- If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.
- If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in. If you answer, I will ask for directions or tell you I am selling something.
- Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
- The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
- If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
- Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
- Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
- It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door—understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather.
- Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
- Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.
- Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
- You're right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.
- A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television.

Frugal Ways to Stay Healthy
Winterset RV Resort, in Palmetto, has some wonderful "useful information" from their April newsletter:
Frugal Ways to Stay Healthy
Medical costs are on everyone’ mind these days with the ongoing debate about health care. Check out these tips from the Federal Citizen Information Center for easy ways you can trim the cost of medicine, fitness and more.
Switch to generic: Because of legal restrictions, a generic drug might not look exactly the same as the name brand, but it contains the same active ingredients and should be just as effective. Rank name drugs cost more because the makers of the original brand name versions had to pay for the research, development and marketing of the medications.
Watch out for scams: They keep coming back in different forms on TV and the Internet, but one thing stays the same: health scams for miracle cures can cost you lots of money. And the diet pills and energy products they push could be dangerous or have harmful interactions with your other medicines. Save your money for doctor-prescribed medicines.
Consider the gym: If you aren’t using your membership regularly, it could be one place where you could save some money.

Florida Beaches
Florida's beaches are beautiful and diverse.
The west side of Florida offers beaches with soft, white sand. The water is calm, clear and warm.
Along the Florida's east coast, the northern beaches are quite different from the east coast's southern beaches. In the north, the sand is harder; one can ride a bicycle on the beach. There aren't many condos and hotels on these more natural beaches. The water is rougher and the shoreline is windswept. The southern part of the east coast is where you will find softer sand, and warm, clear water in many shades of blue and green, because of the Gulf Stream influences. ~ Places Around Florida website
Florida Fun Facts:
~ Key West has the highest average temperature in the United States.
~ Gatorade was named for the University of Florida Gators where the drink was first developed.
~ Florida has over 1,300 miles of coastline with 800 miles of beaches.
~ The Saint John's River is one of the few rivers that flows north instead of south.
~ The largest lake in Florida is Lake Okeechobee.
~ Miami installed the first bank automated teller machine especially for rollerbladers.
~ Ybor City was once known as the Cigar Capital of the World with nearly 12,000 tabaqueros (cigar-makers) employed in 200 factories. Ybor City produced an estimated 700 million cigars a year at the industry's peak.
~ Plant City, the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, holds the Guinness record for the world's largest strawberry shortcake. The 827 square-foot, 6,000 pound cake was made on Feb. 19, 1999 in McCall Park.
~ Islamorada is billed as the Sports fishing Capital of the World
~ The Pinellas Trail, a 47 mile hiking/biking trail connecting St. Petersburg with Central and north Pinellas County, is the longest urban linear trail in the eastern United States.
~ Key Largo is known as the Dive Capital of the World.
~ Florida is not the southernmost state in the United States. Hawaii is farther south.
~ Cape Canaveral is America's launch pad for space flights.

Florida State Parks
The Florida State Parks System encompasses approximately 158 parks, including everything from museums and cultivated gardens to whole island and immense wild areas. The vast majority are open to visitors and campers. The Florida state park system designates its acquisition into about a dozen categories: Florida state preserves, Florida state parks, Florida state historic sites, Florida state archeological sites, Florida state museums and others. Florida State Parks are open from 8 a.m. to sunset everyday of the year. However, many museums, visitor centers and historic sites are closed two days a week and their hours may vary. The park entrance fees vary throughout the state and are subject to change.

Planting Outdoor Annuals
The options for outdoor planting are numerous! These annuals are easy to plant, maintain, provide color and brilliance to your outdoor decor ..... and are hard to kill!
Gem Marigolds
Broadleaf Thyme (also known as Cuban Oregano)
Rugosa Roses
Bee Balm (does attract bees)
Heuchera (Coral Bell) attracts Humming birds
Impatiens (New Guinea tolerate even more sun)
Daylily
Black-eyed Susan
Russian Sage
Coleus
Lantana (attracts butterflies and Humming birds)
Quotes:
"Earth laughs in flowers." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
"One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides." ~ W.E. Johns
Helpful Hints: Save your back while gardening...
•When buying and preparing soil, choose smaller, lighter bags and lift with bent knees and a straight back. Use a rear-tine tiller on the soil to take the strain off your back muscles, or have someone till for you if you are not normally physically active;
•Do not stay in a bent-over position too long. Stand up, stretch and walk around every 10 minutes;
•Kneel down instead of bending over for prolonged periods and use knee pads to protect your knees;
•Use a lightweight, long-handled shovel or spade to reduce back strain; and
•As with all exercise, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
~ Barry Taylor, DC, an assistant professor at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, MN

Happy Easter!
Easter: The greatest feast day in the Christian calendar, celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. From the earliest days of the Church, Easter has been considered the central Christian feast. As Saint Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14, "If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain." Without Easter—without the Resurrection of Christ—there would be no Christian Faith. Christ's Resurrection is the proof of His Divinity.
Easter Sunday in the West can fall on any date from March 22 to April 25th. The year-to-year sequence is so complicated that it takes 5.7 million years to repeat. Eastern Orthodox churches sometimes celebrate Easter on the same day as the rest of Christendom. However if that date does not follow Passover, then the Orthodox churches delay their Easter - sometimes by over a month. To make matters more complex, most Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian Calendar which is currently offset by 12 days from the more generally used Gregorian Calendar. ~ From the website Religious Tolerance
Easter Eggs
Of all the symbols associated with Easter the egg, the symbol of fertility and new life is the most identifiable. The customs and traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries
Different cultures have developed their own ways of decorating Easter eggs. Crimson eggs, to honor the blood of Christ, are exchanged in Greece. In parts of Germany and Austria green eggs are used on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday). Slavic peoples decorate their eggs in special patterns of gold and silver. ~ From the website Easterbunnies.
All of us at Newby Realty wish each of you a blessed and faith filled Easter!
