April Fool's Day

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible.
The origin of April Fools' Day is unknown. One likely theory is that April Fool's Day comes from the Persian tradition of Sizdah Bedar, which is believed to be the oldest prank-related tradition in the world still alive, celebrated by Persians as far back as 536 BC. Other theory is that the modern holiday was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar; the term referred to someone still adhering to the Julian Calendar, which it replaced. In many pre-Christian cultures May Day (May 1) was celebrated as the first day of summer, and signalled the start of the spring planting season. An April Fool may have been someone who did this prematurely. Another possible origin lies in the fact that when King Charles IX of  France  officially  changed  the first day of the  year  from April 1 to January 1, some of his subjects continued using the old system.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week

PALM SUNDAY
Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast which always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. According to the Gospels, before entering Jerusalem, Jesus was staying at Bethany and Bethphage, and the Gospel of John adds that he had dinner with Lazarus, and his sisters Mary and Martha. While there, Jesus sent two disciples to the village, in order to retrieve a donkey that had been tied up but never been ridden, and to say, if questioned, that the donkey was needed by the Lord but would be returned. Jesus then rode the donkey into Jerusalem, with the Synoptics adding that the disciples had first put their cloaks on it, so as to make it more comfortable. The Gospels go on to recount how Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and how the people there lay down their cloaks in front of him, and also lay down small branches of trees. The people sang part of Psalm 118 - ...Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father, David. ... (Psalms 118:25-26).

HOLY WEEK
Holy Week in Christianity is the last week of Lent and the week before Easter. It includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) and Good Friday, and lasts from Palm Sunday (or in the Eastern, Lazarus Saturday) until but not including Easter Sunday, as Easter Sunday is the first day of the new season of The Great Fifty Days. It commemorates the last week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ culminating in his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Wishing everyone a blessed Palm Sunday and Holy Week!

Human Touch Has A Healing Power

The sense of touch is most important of our five senses.  We can't live without it.  It is a basic human need. This isn't surprising when we think about how infants need loving touch to be healthy and develop properly.  Additionally, touch can heal.  Many conditions can be alleviated by the healing touch of another human being:  headaches, stress, anxiety, difficulty relaxing, tiredness, chronic pain, strained or injured muscles.  Healing touches release the body's natural capacity to heal.  It's holistic; starting with the skin, it "touches" the mind and spirit as well as the body.
Simple affection is the most basic form of healing touch.  Hugs, caresses, hand holding, cuddling, kissing and putting an arm around another express love and nurturing.  A pat on the back communicates support and praise.  And doesn't it feel so good???

Therapeutic Massage
This can bring deep relaxation to the body and reduce stress and mental and physical fatigue.  It can help circulation and healing of tissues and bones.  Headaches, back pain, and the pain of tight or overworked muscles can respond to massage.  It can also improve posture, flexibility and give an overall sense of well-being.
     ~ Joel Schorn

Quote:
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."  ~ Leo F. Buscaglia

Helpful Hint:
It is possible to relieve or fend off a headache by gently massaging your ears, which releases tension from head muscles.

A Bit of Humor - You Might be a Massage Therapist if...
■Your uncle throws his back out. And you throw it back in.
■You're the strongest muscle relaxer available without a prescription.
■You never rub people "the wrong way."
■You relax more shoulders before 6 a.m. than most people do their entire lives.

Hospice Care

Hospice care is end-of-life care provided by health professionals and volunteers. They give medical, psychological and spiritual support. The goal of the care is to help people who are dying have peace, comfort and dignity. A Hospice patient is expected to live 6 months or less. The caregivers try to control pain and other symptoms so a person can remain as alert and comfortable as possible. Hospice care can be given at home, in a hospital, a skilled nursing facility or in a Hospice center.
Hospice programs also provide services to support a patient’s family, such as education and guidance related to the tasks and expectations as death nears. Although when and how death will occur is not predictable, there are physical signs and symptoms that life is ebbing away.
Two of the most distressing events for loved ones can be the loss of appetite, and the visions that dying persons sometimes have of those who have already passed on. Knowing what to expect can prepare and reassure those around the dying person that these are normal and natural changes.
Hopice can assist with planning and care issues. A social worker can help you determine the availability of appropriate community resources, Veterans benefits and other services. The chaplain is available to contact a family’s own pastoral minister, to offer blessing, to counsel and guide and to officiate at a service if so desired. They can also accompany you through the funeral observances. They can also be there during the families grieving process.
~ Rev. Donna Marie Tetreault

This is a valuable organization; to those they have helped, their assistance goes beyond words, their worth is immeasurable. If you would like to know more about them and/or where to find them, go to: www.hospicenet.org.

Helpful Hints:
~ When packing to move, put items from one room in the same box, this makes unpacking easier.
~ Keep tools handy for assembling beds and furniture.  Pack the tools in a box you keep with you, so you can find them when you need them.
~ Identify each box with the room it is to go in.  Keep a list of the contents of each box for your easy reference.

A Bit of Humor:  Signs
~ In the offices of a New Jersey loan company: Ask about our plans for owning your home.
~ Notice in a field: The farmer allows walkers to cross the field for free, but the bull charges.
~ On a local plumbing company's trucks in NE Pennsylvania: Don’t sleep with a drip. Call your plumber.
~ On a Maine shop: Our motto is to give our customers the lowest possible prices and workmanship.
~ On a plumber's truck: We repair what your husband fixed.
~ On a repair shop door: We can repair anything. (Please knock hard — bell out of order.)
~ On an established New Mexico dry cleaning store: Thirty-eight years on the same spot.

Spruce up your home with decorating ideas

Tired of your decor?  Ready to make some changes?  Are you at a loss for ideas?

Let us start at the very beginning!  Options are endless!
~  Select a room where you spend most of your time; living room or den, perhaps.  A few new accents may be all it needs, while removing some clutter and uninspiring items.
~ Try rearranging your furniture.  If this is something you do not often do, you may see how refreshing and satisfying it really can be!  It can give the room a whole new look, without costing money!
~  Find a focal point - perhaps a coffee table in the middle of a nice conversational area of your sofa and chairs.  Place a floral arrangement in a colorful vase, photo album or candles on it to bring warmth and interest to the area.
~  If you have a favorite upholstered item that is looking its age, try recovering it, or laying a throw blanket on it, in a bold color to offset the rest of the furniture.
~  Change picture frames with frames or picture mats that blend in the colors on the coffee table.
~  Use throw pillows in these colors for the sofa or chairs.
~  If you are feeling the pangs of crafting or even a bigger task, do some stenciling or put a wooden molding around a window to frame it, and change drapes to blinds.
~  Add a throw carpet (even over your wall to wall carpet) under the coffee table - or in the "traffic path" coming into the room.
One doesn't have to spend much on these changes - just look in thrift stores or consignment shops for good prices.  Others who are doing just what you are doing may have donated their 'tired of ' items - just in time for your turn with them!!

Quote:
Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can on it. - Danny Kaye

Helpful Hint:  Plants to decorate with that are hard to kill!
1.  The Bamboo Plant!  You place the bamboo stalks in a container, add rocks around them to immobilize them and keep the rocks covered with water.  Buying the stalks and the containers to put them in is very inexpensive.
2.  Air Fern!  They don't even need water - just AIR!  Put an air fern in a container, add moss around it and it will grow!  No soil necessary, either!!

A Bit of Humor:
• The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
• Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
• When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.
• Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today, it's called golf.

New Resident Guide

Ice Cream Social this week:
Chateau Village in Bradenton, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.

Welcome to Florida!!
Following are guides to key steps new Floridians need to complete.  These are offered by the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles (posted on their website).
Just moved to Florida and need to get a driver license? Here's what to do:
If you have an out-of-state license, and it has not expired beyond 30 days, you may be able to convert your license without taking a written or road test. You will need to have a vision screening.  Call your local driver license office and schedule an appointment.

Register Your Out of State Car:
You have just 10 days to register your out of state car in Florida.

You Have 30 Days:
Florida law requires that you get a Florida drivers license within 30 days of becoming a resident of Florida. You are a resident if you do one of the following:
    - Enroll your children in a Florida public school

    - Accept employment
    - File for a homestead exemption
    - Reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months

Quote:
"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."   ~ Seneca

Helpful Hints about packing:
    • Packed boxes should weigh less than 50 pounds.
    • Pack heavier items on the bottom.
    • Stuff socks, scarves, pillow cases and other small fabric items
in holes and crevices in boxes - just make sure you keep pairs
           of socks together!
    • Make sure all boxes can close properly and be sealed so the tops
are flat. If you over-pack a box, you risk damage to the contents.

A Bit of Humor:
Oh, how we love words. These are some... strange definitions.
Read them slowly... some may take a second or two to sink in.
EYEDROPPER: A clumsy ophthalmologist.
HEROES: What a guy in a boat does.
LEFT BANK: What the robber did when his bag was full of money.
MISTY: How golfers create divots.
PARADOX: Two physicians.
PARASITES: What you see from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
PHARMACIST: A helper on the farm.
POLARIZE: What penguins see with.
PRIMATE: Removing your spouse from the couch in front of the TV.
RELIEF: What trees do in the Spring.
RUBBERNECK: What you do to relax your wife.
SELFISH: What the owner of a seafood store does.
